Paper #1 As a Healthcare Management major here at Towson University you really gain fantastic knowledge about the medical field. The university offers interactive courses where students are able to interactively learn with hands on courses giving them a feel for what the medical field will really be like. The way that movies and television shows portray the medical field in a way is right but can be over dramatized at times. There are many benefits to healthcare students watching these television dramas. It is not uncommon for most students entering these medical fields to be hooked on these television shows and begin to develop a warped concept for how their future will really be. Whether or not these shows are always accurate, they do provide fast action medical scenarios, which later can be determined whether the accuracy or response time was correct. (Burgess 2015) These shows can be somewhat of a learning experience for medical students. Professors at some medical schools have been notorious for using TV drama clips which will either prove or disprove the assumptions about how the medical field is. In the past there have been numerous accounts in which the rescuer states that they had learned the techniques used to save the individual such as CPR by watching television. (Temple 2015). Although there are many benefits to healthcare students watching medical dramas there are definitely some downsides. Many times these television shows inaccurately portray the way medicine is used. A major misconception that can be taken from television shows is that there are critical cases that have a diagnoses and the patient getting healed and healthy by the end of a 1 hour show, which is obviously impossible. Also in medical television dramas the doctors are mostly handling patients that are in life-threatening situations or crazy scenarios when in reality they normally have common cases and not a lot of

As a nursing student, I am particularly glad that I was exposed to the concept of medical errors this early on in my training so I can actively define my role in preventing them. The documentary reminded me that I am entering a profession where my actions have real and significant consequences. A sloppy or incomplete performance in medicine is unacceptable and I must find the best way to become as competent as possible. I was immediately encouraged to become a better student in the classroom, to work harder and retain necessary knowledge that I know may be of great consequence one day. Additionally, since my skills have not yet been fully established, I can take certain measures to ensure that bad and perhaps dangerous habits which can lead to errors, do not develop.…

Grey's Anatomy has taught me personally so many medical terms I would have never learned without watching the show like hematoma which is the swelling of clotted blood within the tissues of the brain. The series shows real life scenarios with patients and doctors. You get to see first hand what happens in a trauma, a surgery, organ transplant and everything that takes place in a hospital. The show also teaches different medical jobs like an anesthesiologist, physicians, nurses, pharmacy, chief of surgery,…

Ever since I was a preteen, I was always fascinated with the channel TLC— otherwise known as The Learning Channel. This certain channel always seemed to focus their shows on topics related to the medical field whether it was a documentary on a person with a genetic mutation that affected their life dramatically or simply a show about ER doctors. It typically didn’t matter what they were showing on any specific day because the producers of the channel always had my eyes glued to the screen, fascinated with the new discoveries I always felt that I was…

On a more positive note I loved the reality show NY Med which was filmed in NY Presbyterian Hospital on the upper east side in Manhattan. It was realistic and showed the life of nurses and doctors on an everyday basis. It showed real events that take place in the ER and what the nurses actually do. I think this show portrayed a realistic view of what nurses do. Nurses work hard and have to constantly critically think and use their judgment. They work very long hours and sometimes forget to hydrate themselves like me! I think nurses don’t get enough credit sometimes because of some of these shows.…

I am interested in pursing the major I chose above because I have developed a passion for medicine through my own health obstacles. I suffer from Chronic Migraines, which has caused me to spend a great deal of my life in doctor's offices. Positive experiences with my doctors lead to me idolizing them as a young child; so much so that I memorized the every bone in the body at the age of five. This passion stayed alive and well as I grew older, however my admiration began to transition from the doctors themselves to the subject. This all stemmed from my own health; I wanted to know exactly what was happening with my body and why. Now, I want to dedicate my life to the subject and possibly be the doctor that inspires someone to discover their…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Watching television can be educational in both a positive and negative way. In reality shows that teens from the age thirteen and up watch, teens are influenced in a negative way. They see adults acting chaotic; cursing, fighting, screaming, etc. in public areas. This gives people a negative outlook on the world. On the other hand, watching television can be educational in a positive way because there is more to television than reality shows. Television has many positively influenced shows such as: nature, animal, etc. and also negatively influenced shows.…
