First, Buck has to adapt to being loved for the first time ever. For example, John Thorton saves him from being beaten to death and shows him an actual love for the first time. Since Buck was just property before, his owners never showed real love towards him. Second, Buck has to adapt to his unused instincts coming back to him. For example, when John Thorton died, he joined a wolf pack out in the wild. Since Buck did not come from the wild, he never used his actual wild dog instincts. Last, Buck has to adapt to being a wild dog. For instance, Buck hears a call late at night every night and calls back to the wild dogs. Since Buck has never been a wild dog, he has to learn to kill for food and survive on his own. In conclusion, Buck has to use, adaptability to survive.
