The Christmas Carol Analysis

Many great books and dramas are made into movies that are always both slightly different, and slightly the same. Charles Dickens’s famous drama, The Christmas Carol, was not an exception. There have been many versions of the movie, but the one that will be discussed today is the 1984 take, on Dickens’s original script. As mentioned before, there are many similarities and a few differences between the two renditions, none of which are plot changing, or quite so dramatic. Some such similarities are the characters. That includes old Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge himself, who is, the enemy of Christmas, and the main character of both readings. The plot in which Scrooge is visited by the spirits of Christmas past, present, and future, as foretold by his deceased partner, Jacob Marley, is also no different than the
Scrooge’s greed blinds him from seeing goodness and hope and love. His greed is overpowering, and overwhelming, and he refuses to see the good. He turned his head away from what was most important: his family, friends, and his well being. No one can live like that, no one deserves to go through the loss, pain, and agony it will cause everyday. It will harden you into something you never wanted to become. But Scrooge was able to change. The Spirits showed him his life as a greedy rich man, and Scrooge decided then and there, that he would not become subject to the hardships that greed brings. In conclusion, there are so many differences, and even more similarities in most renditions of books, plays, and even true stories. Sometimes, changes are made to make movies more interesting, faster pace, shorter, or add more intensity. Change isn’t always bad, and in most cases, it is good. Even with some of the small change of the script, character portrayal, and setting difference, both the drama and the film, still transmit the same warm, and thoughtful message, to all the audiences, young and
