The Civil War started in 1861 and lasted for four years until the south surrendered in 1865. The war was between the northern states and the southern states of the United States. Since the War there has been a lot of discussions among historians arguing about the cause of the war. Historians have yet to agree if the cause was social, political, economical or a mix of them.
Most of those who believe it was because of economic reasons believe that it was because of The Sectional division of the regions in the country.. The sectional division began in colonial times and was between the north and the south just like The War was. The division resulted from geographical differences.. while the south had good climate and fertile soil for planting tobacco and other crops which lead to an agricultural economy based on slavery. the north on the other hand had a cool climate and rocky soil which meant that their economy was based on trade. the practice of slavery partially falls under this category as well. many southern landowners required several slaves for their crops to make it as cheap as possible.
Those who thought the war was caused because of political reasons believed that the war started because of States versus federal rights and abraham lincoln being elected. When lincoln was elected in 1860 southerners believed that lincoln was anti slavery and favored northerners. Before lincoln even became president seven states had already seceded from the union those seven being South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.
Those who believed the war was caused from social issues believed it was caused by slavery. Slavery was widespread in the south around this time since most southerners had plantations they needed people to work the plantations. Since they didn't care who was doing the work as long as it was cheap and they got the job done the hires african american slave workers to do their jobs. Small plantation
