The Dangers Of Genetically Modified Organisms

GMOs are genetically modified organisms that are usually put in crops to make them bigger, tastier, or healthier. Though this sounds like a great idea there are extreme drawbacks. For instance GMOs are already increasing herbicide use in the U.S. by 26 percent since 1998 when the leaders of GMOs said that they would decrease herbicide use. This also means that more weeds are becoming resistant to herbicides and so GMOs are creating superweeds that are even harder to kill. With the constant spraying of herbicides on our GMO crops the herbicide chemicals are entering into our food supply. This can cause sterility, hormone disruption, birth defects, and even cancer! These are just some of the side effects of the herbicide chemicals. While GMOs were supposed to counter herbicide use the exact opposite has happened and now chemicals are entering our food supply.
This can result in better crops but they can also result in unwanted mutations. These mutations could make plants poisonous, produce new toxins, and result in nutritional deficiencies. This shows how unpredictable and dangerous GMOs are. With these mutations farmers would not be able to tell a regular crop from a mutated one. The farmers would then put these poisonous or cancer causing crops into the market and affect millions of people.
