The day my life changed forever
Diabetes plays a huge role in my family’s health history. As a father one of our favorite activities was to go camping with my family. We went close to every weekend or every other weekend during the spring and summer seasons. As I was enjoying the day with my family, I felt something that was unusual. I had a thirst that could not be quenched come over me and at the time I did not realize that this trip would be very different from any other in the past. We left for our usual camping trip but this time we would be in the doctor’s office. As I sit in the diabetic specialist’s office hearing the news that I was diabetic I realized that the life I had known so far would never be the same.
When I was young I have seen people with their toes got cut off. I think highly of myself that it will never happened to me. But after hearing the news that day my world turned upside down and it seems like my world is coming to an end. I have never thought I will get into a situation like this. Three years ago I became a diabetic, and since then I have been very interested in learning all I can about the disease. As with other diseases, there are disadvantages to having diabetes.
I have found that I must maintain a delicate balance between insulin injections, diet, and exercise in order to keep my blood sugar at a normal level. The maintenance of this balance requires a great deal of my attention, so occasionally I am unable to concentrate completely on some activity. I must always be conscious of my sugar level and be ready to make adjustments if my level is too high or too low. Another problem I have experienced is that other people do not understand diabetes. I have encountered people who think diabetics are sick and cannot lead normal lives. Other disadvantages of diabetes are the daily insulin injections I must take and the complications that can occur if proper control is not

People with this type of diabetes have to inject regular insulin to keep their sugar levels under control which means they have to be more careful when exercising as the sugar levels will fluctuate. They also have to make sure they take the right dose at the right times every day because if they don’t they could go into a hypoglycaemia coma and if they take the insulin but don’t eat then they could go into a Hyperglycaemia coma.…

Ashlee Wells, my sister, is a hardworking 6th grader attending Rogers and I consider her as my hero. I have acknowledged Ashlee as my hero because at age three she was diagnosed with type one diabetes, and this completely changed her life. Type 1 diabetes is when your pancreas can’t produce enough insulin to regulate your blood sugar, so it makes you feel either very hyper or fatigued, but both feelings can lead life-threatening events. Ever since she was pronounced to have diabetes, she has never been able to eat anything or do anything freely without worrying what her sugar is, and how something could affect it. My sister can’t ever be free from this diagnosis, but it doesn't mean she can’t manage what other people can. There is an infinite…

I discovered that I was not going to drown in ignorance and helplessness any longer. Instead, I wanted to understand more about the disease and I was not about to stand idly and watch my mother struggle. I explored on the internet, paid visits to the library, took extra classes at school, and ultimately strived to attain the confidence that comes only with knowledge. I pursued the causes and effects of diabetes, and offered the emotional support that my mother’s physician could not provide. Now, I work together with my mother to create healthy and balanced diet plans for not only my brother and father, but also my aging grandparents and…

When I was five years old, I began to notice that things were not quite right with my body. I was getting sick a lot, and always found myself going to the bathroom. In addition to that, and something that also supplemented the bathroom situation, was that I was always thirsty and in need of a drink. After a while my mother decided to take me to the doctor’s office, where they did some blood testing to hopefully determine what was wrong with me. The results came back, and they said that I had Type 1 Diabetes. The immediately took me to the hospital, Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh, where I was hooked up to an IV and stayed in the emergency room for an entire week. What happened would be something that changed my life from that moment forward.…

To recap, diabetes is a disease that occurs when a body’s pancreas fails to produce enough of the hormone insulin. Insulin acts like a judge and internally helps organisms maintain a healthy blood to sugar ratio. When this ratio is off balance, one of two post conditions will occur; hyperglycemia, which is onset by a high blood sugar or hypoglycemia, which is onset by having a low blood sugar. Statistically, 10% of our total population is plagued with this deadly disease, with majority being type 2. Type 2 diabetes in most cases is very preventable but mandates health eating and regular exercising. For those who are unwilling to make this sacrifice, there is an assortment of expensive treatments available for them to use which range from insulin injections to daily pills. On going advancements are still being made, some of which have potential to end diabetes altogether, such as artificial transplants. Until this break through arrives, its our belief that using simple common sense to make healthier choices could drastically eradicate this highly avoidable…

A patient that is diagnosed with diabetes mellitus will be taught to monitor their blood glucose levels at home. Usually they will monitor four times a day, before each meal and before bedtime. A log should be kept and given to their doctor to determine if treatment is effective to maintain a healthy blood glucose level. Insulin is the most common medication used to treat diabetes mellitus. The patient must be taught about the different kinds of insulin, how to mix the insulin if required, and how to self-inject themselves each day. Education on managing diabetes mellitus is key to being successful. Nutrition will be a huge part of the education process. Eating every four to five hours while awake has proven beneficial in controlling blood sugars and keeping it stable (Williams, L. S., & Hopper, P. D., 2015). It is also important to include a moderate amount of protein and a constant carbohydrate with each meal and snack. Losing 10-20 pounds will have a very positive impact on lowering your blood glucose levels. Getting plenty of exercise will help you to lose weight as well as make you healthier in general which can help control the blood glucose levels (Milchovich, S. K., & Dunn-Long, B., 2011). According to Williams, L. S., & Hopper, P. D., (2015) “the only cure for diabetes mellitus is a pancreas transplant”. However, in type 2 diabetes mellitus, it has been proven effective to lose weight and control your diet and can sometimes reduce the need for medications…

Sometimes it may take more than one pill in order to stabilize the patient’s blood glucose levels. Patients may also be required to participate in routine insulin injections and use other injected medicines. Along with medication, doctors would advise patients to exercise often and keep an eye on their daily diet. Depending on the patient’s health condition, treatment plans may vary. For those who wish to avoid contracting diabetes, the same applies: develop a low-fat, low-calorie diet and exercise daily. All forms of diabetes can be managed in one way or another. However, as of right now, none of the forms can be cured. Therefore, it would behoove one to eat and exercise properly to avoid this disease to begin…

Patient X is a thirty-eight-year-old male with type one late onset diabetes, which is technically called latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). I chose to interview this person because sadly diabetes is one of the most common incurable diseases of today’s time. I think that the public should know more about this disease and the personal struggles that go along with it. Many new developments have been discovered in the scientific community as it concerns diabetes. “It’s becoming clearer that Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age and sometimes occurs in people who are overweight. In addition, another type of diabetes, called latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, or LADA, that shares some characteristics with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, has been recognized. Muddying the water further is the realization that…

Patients with diabetes need to understand what diabetes is. Patients who understand what diabetes is and the complicated process associated with the disease are more likely to comply with the prescribed regimen. Diabetes Mellitus is a syndrome with disordered metabolism and inappropriate hyperglycemia due to either a deficiency of insulin secretion or to a combination of insulin resistance and inadequate insulin secretion to compensate (Davis, 2001). Diabetes is a chronic progressive disease that requires lifestyle changes, especially in the areas of nutrition and physical activity. The overall goal of medical and nutritional therapy is to assist persons with diabetes in making self-directed behavioral changes that will improve their overall health (Franz, 2012). Alejandro states that after all these years, he is still learning about the latest tests, medication, and procedures regarding his diagnosis. Alejandro states, “I will never stop learning or researching about this, there is a lot to know and I want to make sure I have all the facts.” Overall, Alejandro states that his educational experience was positive, but overwhelming in the beginning. Alejandro explains the hardest part of having diabetes is in social situations where the menu is not tailored to someone with diabetes. He says holiday gatherings, and barbeques are the hardest because of the food. However, now that his friends and family know of his diagnosis, they have started changing the menu to accommodate him. Alejandro also explains that the exercise routine was very hard to fit into his schedule in the beginning. He was very tired after work, and started with thirty-minute workouts. Alejandro workouts increased little by little and now they consist of an hour of cardio and thirty minutes of weight lifting. At one point he asked his nephew to get him motivated and show him how to correctly perform the exercises. Alejandro says the nephew being a personal trainer taught him a lot about how exercise affects the body through reducing insulin levels. He really had to monitor his blood sugar in the beginning due to his exercise routine and losing weight, but he now says he has it under control. Alejandro also takes credit for being a pioneer for his family as far as his weight loss.
