The Destabilization Of Democracy In The United States
Democracy is a system of government in which government is accountable to and for the citizens. Democracy is built on basic principles that if not met will destabilize the ideals of democracy. These principles include political equality, outlets for popular consultation, and majority rule. If large segments of the population are denied political rights by virtue of their race, family heritage, economic status, or religious affiliation, than political influence is not in the hands of the people, and the government fails to meet the principles. The Patriot Act/Freedom Act is an example of the government giving military power to wiretap, search business records, and conducting surveillance of individuals suspected of terrorist-related activities …show more content…

In this case, democracy can be destabilized due to limited opportunities for the working class to be heard and alter changes in the communities in which they live. Majority Rule means that when citizens disagree about a political decision or candidate then the decision made or the candidate selected will be the one preferred by the larger group of people. The problem that arises with majority rule is that minorities would not be given any political power. Destabilization of democracy is happening because minorities are unable to be heard and laws are put in place against their favor. This causes strikes and protests. Protests is a tool interested groups use to effect change and to fight for their right to veto a policy or whole power government in order to make a systematic change. This destabilizes the very idea of democracy because the government isn’t maintaining accountability for minorities and their needs. For example, Venezuela has opposition towards Nicolas Maduro who won the April 2013 election with barely 50.7 percent of the electorate, resulting in chaos and violence. Organized marches one after another was use to confront the needs of groups previously …show more content…

I believe it’s a great example of democracy destabilizing political equality. The government gave overwhelming power to an elite group, the police, to stop anyone they deem. In most cases the people stopped were minorities. So, people were denied rights based on their race and economic status. Political differences causes the destabilization of democracy. Different cultures tend to get ignored in policy making. The accountability of a democratic nation is subject to limitations because throughout history it has shown that only a select few are

Not only that but it also angered many whites who wanted to keep controlling the African American community. This incident caused African Americans to stand up and fight for equality. Unfortunately, this incident only caused the violence to increase racial discrimination against blacks rather then aiding them in moving toward…

What is a democracy? A democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. America is sometimes considered a democracy, which troubles many individuals because unlike a democracy citizens in America do not vote directly on law, elected representatives do. I believe things like gerrymandering, voter dominance methods, and the Electoral College are a few examples keeping America from being a democracy. But then you have constitutional protections, rule of law and democratic representation that all coincide with democracy in America.…

Although the United States government promises its people that they live in a true democratic country, the United States is definitely not a democracy. A democracy by definition is “the government by people.” However, the United States looks as if it is a constitutional republic, rather than democracy. A constitutional republic is “a state in which the head of state or officials are representatives of the people.” The United States is a country run by the government officials, not the people, the government is taking away the rights that the U.S. Constitution promises its people, and not all citizens are treated equally or given the same rights. Therefore, the United States is far from a democracy at this time.…

The government, a republic under democratic ideals, is supposed to represent the people. Yet what is truly being represented, shown in the policies in tax reductions and various other policies, is the rich. Just one of the top 10 most richest people in America have more money than 300 thousand of the lowest people put together. People are so distracted by other things, like racism, the gay marriage laws that were passed, and all these social issues that they don’t see one of the main problems at hand. Because of this “U.S government policies reflect the desires of the wealthy and interest groups more than the average citizen, according to researchers at Princeton University and Northwestern University” (Bondoli 1). Why? A democratic society has the most power in the people as a whole.…

The United States is said to be and has the properties of a democracy. A democracy is defined as a government in which the people decide matters directly through town hall meetings or voting on a ballot box. There have been a few major laws passed that have been passed by Supreme Court in which the people didn’t have a vote or consent on the law. Two examples of this are legalizing gay marriage and gun laws. The United States has also in a way turned into an oligarchy. It has come to where the rich are starting to rule the country. If the U.S was truly a democracy the government would look to all of the people for their vote and consent on a law, and their should be equality between the first, middle, and lower class people.…

Yes, under a democracy we still have laws we have to abide by, but overall, we have the most freedom out of any other country in this world. According to ait.org, a democratic government exists to serve the people, but citizens in democracies must also agree to abide by the rules and obligations by which they are governed(what is democracy).…

The system of democracy was supposed to have citizens participate and concoct themselves over their leaders; however, since it is only based on the opinions of the majority and not the minorities, it can go against the minorities liberty and equality. An example of majority would be the House of Representative as the house is directly elected by the people. It was ideal for the majority rule over the minority to work in the political system, but the Founding Fathers feared that the majority will take over and become tyrannical, in which individual liberties would be…

The United States is the most powerful nation on earth, politically, economically and militarily, but its political system is in many important respects unlike any other in the world. Aristotle called the rule of the many for the benefit of all citizens a “polity” and referred to the rule of many to benefit themselves as a “democracy”. The term democracy is derived from the Greek words demos (the people) and kratia (power or authority) and may be used to refer to any system of government that gives power to the people, either directly, or indirectly through elected representatives. Democracy is hard, perhaps the most complex and difficult of all forms of government. It is filled with tensions and contradictions, and requires that its members labor diligently to make it work. Democracy is not designed for efficiency, but for accountability; a democratic government may not be able to act as quickly as a dictatorship, but once committed to a course of action it can draw upon deep wellsprings of popular support. Democracy, certainly in America, is never a finished product, but is always evolving. The outer forms of government in the United States have altered little in two centuries, but once we look past the surface we discover great changes. Yet, most Americans believe that the basic principles underlying their government derive directly from notions first enunciated by the Framers. The Framers wanted to create a political system that involved placing the people at the center of power. Due to the vest size of the new nation, direct democracy, a system of government in which members of the polity meet to discuss all policy decisions and then agree to abide by majority rule, was unworkable. As more and more settlers came to the New World, many town meetings were replaced by a system of indirect democracy, a system of government that gives citizens the opportunity to vote for representatives who work on their behalf. Many citizens were uncomfortable with the term…
