Thoughts quickly shifted to the struggle between good and evil .The inner struggle of good and evil that many tragic heroes in history and film have been faced with but usually overcome was used as a platform to go from, but in our version evil overcomes good to convey the message of ugly more clearly. While Satan’s humane emotions were demonstrated earlier in the narrative, his soliloquy further explicates the complexity of his thoughts. Throughout the first few books, Satan does not demonstrate any vulnerabilities. He is glorified as an obstinate and prideful Spirit who surpasses all others in Hell and who knows exactly what he yearns. Though Satan’s abilities are of no question, this one-sided view of Satan – that he is a competent and powerful devil – appears lacking; therefore, the demonstration of Satan’s vulnerability in his soliloquy is a progression in his character development. Satan finally senses “horror and doubt,” and is drenched in grief by his “remembrance from what state [he] fell” (4:17, 38-39). This is the first time Satan is described to have self-doubt, and specifically, in…

Her body structure is very strong and stiff. She seems to be crossing her arms in a defensive pose. She is looking straight at the photo person with an intensely cold stare. It might show that she is going through a lot. She is smoking a cigarette in her left hand which indicates that she is around people who smoke. She has a white dress with ruffles that seem too big to fit her petite body. Since she has a petite body, she might not have enough to eat. Her hair is not very mangled and not brushed, which shows she does not take good care of her own personal hygiene. The little girls face is somewhat boney and there obviously bags under her eyes. She has dirt under her nails which shows she may not have good hygiene, which show us that she might not have a home to take a shower in. These shows how she poverty and hardship has really…

She has styled herself very distinctly with bold, metallic eye makeup and thin drawn on eyebrows, which she is shown applying multiple times throughout the film, highlighting the effort involved in creating the image she wants to portray. The frivolity of Sunny’s makeup and various clothing choices, like brightly colored high heels are a stark contrast between her and the bleakness of her environment. Within her outfits she often contrasts very casual elements with more formal pieces, such as wearing her bright, metallic high heels with a pair of fraying cutoff denim jeans. Pieces like her jeans, a leather jacket and an oversized buttoned down shirt, along with her cropped hair cut add a masculine, or at least androgynous, edge to her persona. Even in her performance outfits, which tend to contain materials associated with femininity like lace or sequins, she is always wearing pants. While by 1980 a woman wearing pants would not be seen radical, it still adds a sense of modernity to her wardrobe when compared to the other musicians she performs with. This effect is exaggerated when Sunny is engaging with the other female characters in the film, like her other female band mate, who sports long flowing hair and low cut tops or the other female singer they tour with who is shown performing in a long pink gown. While she styles herself this way during the time-span during which…

In “The Demon Lover” by Elizabeth Bowen, the female protagonist, Kathleen Drover, finds that the atmosphere, interiorly and exteriorly of her former home, is similar to her repressed memories of a past life. Kathleen Drover arrives to her former residence with an initial plan to pack up a few items from her former life; the “steamy, showery day” (1) represents Kathleen’s need to restore her current life by obscuring memories that surfaced upon her arrival to the house. However, Kathleen, in an unstable mental state, cannot keep these memories from surfacing, and much like the poor ventilation in the house that makes “the whole drawing room [smell] of the cold hearth” (1), she cannot stop the memories from filling her thoughts. Kathleen hits…

In his article titled “the frivolity of evil,” Dr Dalrymple defines evil as,” the elevation of passing pleasure for oneself over the long-term misery of others to whom one owes a duty.” Dr. Dalrymple describes how his community and the people who live there are stuck in a cycle of evil. He believes that this cycle is a side effect of Great Brittan’s transformation in to a welfare state along with our culture of entitlement. The many years of dedicated study and extensive observations, has granted Dr Dalrymple unique perspective and a deep insight regarding the human condition and their social concerns. Using examples from his work in a prison psychiatrist hospital, we see how easily this type of evil spreads through a community…
