The Dichotomy Of Don's Life
Don was an interesting young man. Don had soft features of his face. His hair was black as night. His eyes looked as if God himself put emeralds in his eyes. Don was of medium stock and in addition had the mind of a man beyond his years, mainly from all the books he found and read.
For Don was not of a wealthy background. His father, Ben had not been as fortunate as others. This party of two has been through much together. They lived in New Orleans but now they live in Baton Rouge because of only one reason. On August 23, 2005 one of the worst hurricanes hit New Orleans. This monumental storm ensnared any and everything that they had.
This villainous storm even snatched the life of Don’s mother, Ruth. Where there is death, there is also life.

When the murderer masked by howling winds and stinging rain passed, they had lost everything. Even with the loss of Don’s mother and Ben’s beloved wife, their spirit was never broken. Nevertheless Ruth’s memory lived on in the hearts of Don and Ben. Don had called a single wide trailer home ever since his dad found a job at the junk yard in Baton Rouge. Don stepped out of the trailer he said to his father “I’m off to the sanctuary.” His father would always advise Don to be safe and would say “take that colossal dog of yours.” As Don called to Mars he studied his humble home. His trailer was a fading white with a solid green door that always squeaked hello and goodbye as if greeting its owner for the first time and goodbye for the last time.
Sanctuary was a special place to Don in the junk yard. He called it his sanctuary because that is where he went to get away from everything and get lost in his books. Don had created a cozy, comfortable place in the middle of the trash dump. Don had a special chair that he had found along with a variety of books. Mars had his own little blanket to lay on while Don was reading. Don was studying and reading to get ahead in high school that would be beginning tomorrow. While Don would read and study, Mars would always tirelessly watch over

With the disapproving eyes of his new class mates he found himself at the back of the bus. This was not the first impression he was expecting from his new class mates. With every derogatory comment of his peers, his spirit began to crumble. With the bus ride seeming to last forever and a day the bus finally made it to school. Don’s outlook on school diminished as more and more of his peers crudely looked down their nose at him. Class to class the attitude was always the same towards him. Because the students knew that Don lived in a junk yard and didn’t wear new and stylish clothes, they treated him as a second class citizen. Don could not make any friends because his peers would never give him a chance to prove himself. On the way to lunch Don saw shelves of books. This unusual sight perk his curiosity. When Don opened the door to the library he was amazed at the sight of so many books. This room was perfect for Don and his hobby for books. With everything that had happened on the first day of school, this was the only good thing that came out of it. Don had moved his sanctuary to this spot from the dump. Don knew that this was the spot to plant his seed of his education and this rose of education would go in to full blossom by the end of the

Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways.
