The Dinner Party By Mona Gardner
A snake is on my foot, help! That is probably what most people would do if they had a snake on their foot, but this isn't the case for a dinner party hostess in the short story “The Dinner Party,” written by Mona Gardner. In this story, a British woman puts on a dinner party. There arouses a conversation about males being better than females. The colonel states that females scream in scary situations and men don't. This was an argument that could be backed up by evidence until a small boy was asked by the woman to get a bowl of milk, also known as cobra bait. After some time, everybody in the room was aware of the cobra, and the men screamed, but the woman, who had the cobra on her foot, did not. This shows that the theme is to not underestimate somebody simply because of how they appear. …show more content…
For example, in the story, the woman is made fun of because the colonel thinks all she does is scream, and isn't as brave as men. They think this simply because she is a woman. They are proved wrong on this, however, because the woman is nothing but calm when a cobra slithers on her foot. This shows that the men underestimated her, and she made them feel sorry for it. The girl’s actions make her a key part of what makes up the theme, but so does the colonel as well. The colonel makes fun of females in this story for not being as brave as men. In the story, he shows that underestimating somebody can come back to haunt you. For example, in the story, the author says that everybody screamed when they became aware there was a snake, including the colonel, who had just made fun of girls because they aren't as brave as men. This shows readers that the colonel was wrong and shouldn't have jumped to conclusions about girls so quickly. Then again, maybe the colonel wouldn't have been so scared if the boy had said something

One of the ideas Gilbert has in his essay that really shines through for me is specifically how he emphasizes the astounding price we pay. In reality, we do pay a lot for our children. We pay for their basic necessities like food, diapers, and clothing. We pay for extravagant cribs and top of the line car seats to ensure safety. Parents go into debt, take on multiple jobs and give up promising careers to provide.…

I fell back on the mulch, full of tears, wishing that I'd never existed. The whole world was spinning. I felt like sinking deep into the grounds of the earth, and never returning. I thought I was ordinary. I did ordinary things an ordinary kid would do. But maybe not to them... The two vicious cobras hissed and snatched at me. Their venom sunk into me like a needle; It hurt. It stung . I couldn't hold the tears back anymore. Those two cobras changed my life. It was recess time, and I was playing on the playground like any other kid would do. Then came the cobras, slithering towards me like I was the prey; the tiny little mouse that had no strength. "You're a maid," they exclaimed. "You don't belong here!" The two pushed me down, my body landing…

“The Dinner Party” by Mona Gardner is a short story that proves that a woman is not just a person who is scared easily and is less intelligent than men. The hostess notices that there is a cobra in the room and immediately stays still and tells the American boy what she noticed. “The boy’s eyes widen, and he quickly leaves the room.” This shows that if the hostess stays still and stays under control and the American boy gets very frightened and jumps out of his chair that a woman’s first reaction is not to just scream and run away but that they are equal to men. The American boy then scans the room to try to find the cobra, once he realized that the cobra could only be under the table he thought of a clever idea to make sure no one moved he…

In “The Dinner Party” by Mona Gardner, the author skillfully utilizes the characters in order for the reader to come across a general message. She manages to use their individual mindsets, conversations, and personalities so that the message is subtly hidden and tucked in to the entire story. Some readers think that the message she is trying to place in the reader’s brains is that there is a severe sense of social inequality in this world, and that people should not judge others based on things that the person cannot change, like race or gender. The colonel in the story argues that “women haven’t the actual nerve control of men.”…

After the American naturalist helped get rid of the snake, he asks “‘Just a minute,’ the American says, turning to his hostess.
