The Edge Of Night Visual Analysis
The daytime TV serial is a special breed of entertinament. It has generally been watched by millions of people over the years, yet it has always been considered the laughing stock of TV in general.Yet many people still watch daytime TV and in recent years it has started to gain a bit more respect by critics and journalists. One of the greatest highlights of the daytime TV serial is the many different forms of paratexts that surrounds each and every show. While scouring the internet for an example of a paratext, I found a rather fascinating one for the series The Edge of Night (1956-1984). We will be exploring this paratext for a classic serial, and eventually find out how the paratext at hand would help promote the show for general audiences at the time. This specific paratext comes in the form of an advertisement that could have been found in a newspaper or magazine. The biggest point of this advertisement is to promote the fact that The Edge of Night is moving to ABC. This statement is highlighted by big font and an exclamation mark to signify to people that this is a very big deal. The statement is short, sweet and to the point, but more importantly it is very hard to miss, since it’s smack dab in the middle of the advertisement. This is actually …show more content…
Obviously this is just an extension of the previously mentioned promotion, but now we know what channel to tune in to and when we should be switching on our TV sets to check out the show. Beneath this information is a vitle piece of info that almost comes off as a mere footnote, telling us that the show will begin airing on Wednesday, 12/3. This bottom quarter of the advertisement is a lot of information that promotes the important details on when and where to view this show, it seems obvious, but in an age without the internet this is a very important part of the

Elie Wiesel’s memoir ‘Night’ shows concepts of dehumanisation and savagery through the times of the Holocaust. Wiesel documents his experiences of hardship and atrocities to warn future generations of what occurred so that history doesn’t repeat itself. Through two passages we see images of the brutality that had occurred throughout the journey Elie had experienced. Although the passages are similar, they differ from each other because they’re both different experiences. In the first selected passage we see images of brutality being witnessed by a young boy whose beliefs are destroyed and there is no help, only ‘silence’. In the second selected passage the horror of the 42+ mile death march was documented which occurred later in the memoir.…

In both "Friday Night Lights,"by H. G. Bissinger, and "Quiet Strength," by Tony Dungy, their are two coaches who are very similar, yet very different in their own ways. In one coaches locker room you may find an aggressive, hostile written note. While in the other coaches locker room you'll find bibles. Both coaches have a winning mentality, how they go about winning though is a different story. The quite, calm, and faith first mentality of one coach, verse the loud, aggressive, in your face way of coaching from the other. These books though also have their own similarities. Such as how football can serve as a way out for people. How winning is important, and what it means to be a winner in life, and in the game. Then the differences, such…

The relationship between a father and a son is a long and complicated one. Many trials can break the bond amongst predecessor and descendant, however, only a genuine, unsettling evil can bring the two together more closely than ever before. Three techniques are easily identified in the excerpt: the motif of identity loss, resonance to the readers and imagery. From this small section of the memoir important understandings are easily identifiable, such as the way Shlomo and Elie’s relationship intensifies and completely reverses, from a father and child, to equals, and finally Elie taking full care of his father by the end of his journey.…

The first thing that catches my eye when I see the ad is the headline, “WIN A TRIP TO HAWAII!” Hawaii would be really fun to go to visit, so naturally a person looks down to see what they have to do to get win a trip, the next largest thing is the image of Dove chocolates. I know that I just skim articles, so I wouldn’t bother to read anymore, just put it together that to win I should buy Dove.…

Traumatic. Horrifying. Life changing. In the memoir Night by Elie Weisel he tells about the struggles Elie went through. The torture he suffered in the concentration camps during the holocaust. From losing his family, being beaten, starved, and worked to death at only 15 years old. Although one of Elie's biggest loss was his faith. In Night Elie's faith goes from strong, to questioning his beliefs, to having anger towards God.…

This book looks closely at character development and how linguistics and dialogue further the development of the characters in a variety of television shows. The book specifically looks at Gilmore Girls in Part One, “Fictional Television: Dialogue and Drama,” and in the chapter “The Genre of Dramedy and its Audience.” In this chapter, Bednarek looks at the relationship between dialogue and genre, specifically the intertextual references and dramedy of Gilmore Girls. In analyzing the dialogue, Bednarek looks specifically at the “intertextual references to classical literature, popular culture, American and European history, celebrity, feminist activism and current events” (31). It also gives an overview of the show itself, discussing its commercial success and its place within both The CW and The WB. This will help me as I discuss the intertextuality within the dialogue and will help support my argument that the intertextuality in the episode and the show as a whole furthers character development and audiences’ perception of the characters.…

Many Jews in Sighet chose not to believe the warnings from Meadle the beadle who caught glimpses of the full horror. Many people clung to the belief that his reports were exaggerated because contemplating the truth was too horrible. Even Elie who heard of Meadle’s stories took pity on him not fully aware of what was to come. The Jews of Sighet caught glimpses of what waited for them unwilling to believe in Hitler’s plan or escape whatever was to come. Until the Jews experienced first-hand the horrors that existed, they cannot believe that such horrors exist. On the first train to the first labor camp Elie felt optimistic when arriving to Auschwitz saying “Confidence soared. Suddenly we felt free of the previous nights’ terrors. We gave thanks to God.” (Wiesel 27). When arriving to the camp Elie became more optimistic when he started to find people he knew still alive, even in these dark times he was able to find happiness. Not only did Elie have this mind set but the others in the camp as well they believed the war was about to end, even though there was no clear sign. Upon hearing that they were bought to Auschwitz to be killed the younger Jews wanted to rebel while the older ones told them to rely on faith. In the midst of religious persecution the Jews managed to look on the brighter side of things…

The most prominent theme of the novel highlights war. Doerr’s work of fiction uses physical symbols to showcase the effects of war on people, of resistance to oppression, and the effort of citizens trying to maintain normality, creating a whole better understanding for readers about the outcomes of war. Historians, philosophers, and writers alike can attest to the human struggle to follow a certain moral code; history shows a constant rift between what humans claim they should do and what they actually do. If this rift did not exist, many a crisis and war could be averted, but humanity would not be its beautifully flawed self. In the novel All the Light We Cannot See, Doerr is raved over for “masterfully and knowledgeably recreating the deprived civilian conditions of war-torn France and the strictly controlled lives of the military occupiers” (Hooper 23). However, the use of literary devices in the novel reflects a message deeper than that of just another war-time story. Doerr utilizes the war setting as a means of further exploring the nature of humanity in a distinct context. He does not define the characters by war; he defines the characters and gives them a war to respond…

In the autobiographical novel, Night, by Elie Weisel, there is a persistent change in theme. The story begins in 1944 where Elie was very focused on learning about his religion from Moshe the Beadle. However, later on, the Jews were forced to move into ghettoes in their city. This began the lowest point in their lives. From then(There? meh), they were taken to various concentration camps such as Birkenau, Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Gleiwitz. It wasn’t until April 10, 1945 that they were freed. Throughout the advancement of this novel, Elie’s feelings about himself, his family, and his God were altered while in concentration camps.…

Outside of children's literature, language play is rife- for example in the media, wherever a writer aims to make some point memorable or pithy. We find examples of language play in the alliteration of a headline, in the rhymes and jingles of advertisements and radio shows, in pop songs, slogans, magazine headers and TV presenters' catchphrases. In short, whenever someone is trying to sell us…
