The Elevator By William Slator Analysis
Creepy crawlers are totally disgusting! I have a strong hate towards them and i do not think that is going to change because to tell you the truth my number one phobia is bugs. Sounds very embarrassing, but having phobias is common. Just ask a boy named Martin in the story called “The Elevator” written by William Slator. The story is about a boy who tumbles across phobias as they get presented right in front of him throughout the story. He has three fears, the elevator, the fat lady, and his dad’s judgement. William Slator also telegraphs Martins’ lack of ability to get over his fears by building suspense through Martins’ thoughts and actions which are all efforts to avoid these fears. Mainly he is doing this because he is claustrophobic …show more content…
Instead he would rather take the stairs. In lines(34-35) “The fear of being trapped there for hours by himself.” is what Martin was saying in the third person to explain that he is scared of either being stuck and never getting out of the elevator and he would feel if that ever happened. He is also going to hate being on the elevator alone because what if it stops? Who is going to help him get out or save him? With all of these problems, you may be wondering where his dad is in all of this so he can be there for him. Well Martin’s dad is there, but on the contrary he can not go to him for help because he is afraid of his dad’s judgement We do not know if Martin has a mother but if he does not that is probably why Martin’s dad is so rude and mean to him. In line(168-170) it reads, “Afraid to be on the elevator alone?” his father said, with a look of scorne. “Grow up Martin.” the door slammed. That emphasizes how his dad now may be thinking Martin is a coward and can not do anything right or handle anything like an adult. Martin’s dad already does not like how he acts and we can tell this in the next thing he says, “Not only are you skinny, weak, and bad at sports, but you are also a

In paragraph twelve of his letter, we can see that Martin uses the repetition of “When you” to show the current limitations and struggles of the negro race. The serious blow of heartbreak is when he claims that he could not take his child to Funland based off the color of her skin. He next uses the trope “There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over, and men are no longer willing to be plunged into the abyss of despair” What this trope shows is that there is a breaking point, a time where one can not fight anymore. This shows his passion for fighting now, not later for inalienable…

The Ceiling, by Kevin Brockmeir, is a story about the gradual dissolution of a marriage between a husband, the narrator, and his wife, Melissa, during which a pitch black apocalyptic, metaphoric “ceiling” from the sky is descending across the town. As Melissa drifts further and further into a supposed depressive state, generating sorrow and sadness among the family members and citizens of the city, the ceiling, on gravitational downward path, is causing confusion and destruction. Throughout the majority of the plot the protagonist tries to lead his life as typical as possible, eventually however, the story reaches its climax when his wife’s infidelity is exposed and the ceiling collides with the earth, forcing the characters to deal with their mistakes and tragedy.…

“As a child, Martin never had a real home… When they finally stopped moving, it was too late for Martin. He couldn’t settle. He had never stayed anywhere long enough to make friends or keep up with his schoolwork. His family wanted to help him but didn't know how. He began skipping school and spending more and more time on the streets with other truants. At first it was great. The group begged on the streets and on the streets and in the shopping malls. Sometimes they stole clothes or videos and CDs. It was only a matter of time before Martin was caught” (Stearman, 7).…

I believe the subterranean architecture in George Tooker’s “The Subway” (1950), creates an atmosphere of fear and depression that convey to the dominant expression of the painting. A fearful and depressed looking woman dressed in a red dress with a blue trench coat is standing in the middle of a subway. However, this endless subway looks very easy to get lost in, with concrete walls and bars like a prison. The lack of signs in the subway creates a feeling of no connection and isolation. The men in long brown and tan coats, buttoned to the throat behind the woman’s shoulders have a suspicious-look; they look very cold, anxious, and indifferent.…

Chains is a good book title for a book like this because during the time set of the book was set in slaves were very popular. It’s a good title because the story is about a slave girl who is sold to an awful woman by the name of Madam Lockton and it seems as if Isabel the slave girl is chained to a never ending prison. A quote that is used to describe that Isabel is chained to slavery is, “‘The toothless sailor approached us again and pointed down to the dock where the crates and casks stamped LOCKTON & FOOTE were being stacked. “that’s where you belong” (27). This represents that the Locktons are quite the traders and have a lot of money and power. Another way the title “‘Chains”’ is significant is that the slavery she is put in chains her…

Earlier in the episode Robert Sloan tells Martin “I don’t want to hurt you, I don’t want you to get in trouble, but if you hang around here, there may be trouble”. Unfortunately, Martin did not listen and ended up with a lifelong limp from just changing one event in his past. Even though Robert did not know what could happen if he stayed in town he knew it wouldn’t be good, because you can’t change your past. No matter how appealing it sounds to go back in time to change something in your childhood its probably not smart, because it could possibly make things worse, like it did for Martin. It could possibly make thing better too however, there is no real way of telling. With Martin altering his past and causing a lifelong limp there might be events the younger Martin had to miss because he had a broken leg. There are reasons we cannot time travel it will only make things worse whether it for you or for someone else there will always be…

During Joseph Martin journey in the revolution war he found himself not agreeing with many of the things the other soldiers were used to doing. The other soldiers were used to always getting what they wanted, when they wanted it. In order to do this, whenever they needed something, such as food they would just barge into nearby homes and demand for what they wanted. Most home owners knew that if they didn't do what the soldiers asked, that things would go very bad quickly. Meaning a large amount of the home owners would just be friendly and give the soldiers what they wanted just to keep the peace. Also some of the home owners enjoyed getting a visit from the soldiers because it made them fell wanted and thankfully to help support a fellow soldier. Martin didn't have the same view as many of the soldiers did on this certain activity. Well he was involved with doing that activity he would feel guilty and wanted to apologize to the family because he didn’t think they deserved such a thing. He didn’t enjoy doing it because he believed it was rude and that they were abusing their power of authority. Before he went to war he learned right from wrong and would never imagine doing such a thing to innocent citizens in the area. The only reason that he would participate in this activity was because Soldiers during the war had been doing it prior to when he entered the war and he didn't want to deal with all the others soldiers by telling them his real opinion on it. Also he needed the items the other soldiers were asking for as well but just wanted there to be another way for them to get it. Even though he didn't agree with many of the things he had to do while he was gone at war, going into other people's home uninvited was the thing he disagreed with the most.…

When we think of love the first thing that comes to mind is a person. A person whom we care and have strong and constant affection towards. In the 21st century we see true “love” fading away. Unfortunately, we live in an era where traditional values of love and honor are being replaced with our own dreams so much that divorce is now a common word. Peter Meinke’s use of symbols in “The Cranes” gives the impression of being a simple love story of an old couple birdwatching while reminiscing on their life together, but in reality reveals the darker components of love.…

The way the arachnid stares at you with those black beady eyes really gives you the heebie-jeebies. As it crawls towards you, you are absolutely petrified trying to figure out a way to execute it the most lethal way possible. Although, you may be a thousand times bigger than the specimen, it’s still able to give you a shiver down your spine. You might have guessed the abomination I was speaking about: they are spiders.…

Most of the time, people are afraid of spiders because they've been trained to fear them by their parents and friends. Psychologists Bandera and Rosenthal felt fear reactions are acquired by modeling (Comer, p. 112). Classical conditioning and genetics also come into play (Comer, p. 111-113). I think it is wise to fear spiders; some spiders can inflict a nasty bite as with the brown recluse spider. I know there are ways to overcome your fears such as reconditioning and exposure therapy, but I have no interest in doing that. Exposure treatments that desensitize you are the standard treatments for phobias (Comer, p. 113). But why would anyone want to be exposed to spiders on purpose? If there happens to be a TV show on The National Geographic…
