Based in recent surveys, reports show a trending decline on the rate at which physicians move. Statistically, this (may) suggest the economy is preventing or affecting physicians from frequent job changes, or retirement. According to survey results, the move rate was reported as follows: 18.2% in 2008, 15% in 2009, 12.4% in 2010, and 11.3% in 2011. In as much as this reflects an obvious trend of lower move rate over the years, and may be attributed to a number of factors, it is however not enough scientific measure to ascertain the market supply and demand for physicians.…

The independent action of medical school, the teaching hospitals, the American Board of Medical specialties and ACGME affects the number, preparation and type of physician and even the distribution of the specialties within the physician workforce. Per our text, there were predictions that either physician shortage or physician oversupply. Regardless of the increase in physician shortage or physician oversupply, the geographic variation in physician location versus the physician numbers is always a problem. There is a continued low supply in less attractive rural and inner-city areas that most medical graduates do not want to take. With foreign medical graduates, proper clinical assessment and training before entering the residency, there was…

Coming from a remote village in India where access to medical care is limited, I have had the dream of becoming a physician since I was very young. But, being a curious individual, growing up I became fascinated toward other career paths in my childhood as well. For example, I wanted to become a pilot when I was in second grade, and wanted to become a professional volleyball player when I was in fifth grade. I am glad that I spent enough time in researching those career paths that I had absolutely no hesitation or distraction when I started pursuing my career in medicine. Today, I can say that pediatrics is my only career interest.…
After doing research I found out that this career is really no different than other careers. Just like other careers you have to be focused and know that this career is what you really want to do for the rest of your life. You still have to have fun with your work and you don’t have to overload your brain with tons of information. Most people in the medical field are fascinated with the things they learn and the do activities outside of class that still requires the skills learned insider of class. I learned you don’t have to only be associated with people in this field; you just have to know when enough is enough and it’s time for you to go back to your studies. You really would have to research this topic on your own and actually talk to people who have faced the obstacles and know what it is like. I had a lot of fun researching this topic and I found a lot of information that I knew nothing about. I will continue to search for anything else that could help me with my career because I am still interested in it and I want to know everything there possibly is to…
There are a number of factors contributing to the shortage of primary care physicians. The simple rule of supply and demand is driving the physician shortage. The existing primary care physician workforce is shrinking as the demand for primary care services is increasing because of the aging population and the expected number of insured Americans who will enter the system through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Christian, 2011). The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is the federal statute that attempts to reform the American healthcare system by providing more Americans with affordable health insurance (Currie, 2013). Some other reasons why there is a shortage of primary care physicians is that a significant portion of the physician workforce (33%) is over the age of 55 and is planning to retire in the next ten to fifteen years (Amirault, 2014). The number of U.S. medical students going into…

Doctors are always narrowed down to one specific field. This is determined during their schooling. To become a doctor you need to attend at least eight years of college. Four of those years are to receive your Bachelor’s degree. During those four years you take all of your core classes, which include a lot of psychology and philosophy and about three levels of many different sciences. After you graduate you then have to apply to medical school. This is often an entirely different college. You take in depth courses on each branch of medicine, which normally takes about four more years. These courses involve a lot of memorization of every common and uncommon illness and their symptoms. After their final four years, they get their experience in a…
