She tells him that she needs someone to help chop wood for her stove and Father Olguin directs her to Abel. For three dollars, he agrees. Angela has an eye for Abel and is attracted to the way he chops the wood. Abel says he will return to chop the remainder of the wood, but is unclear as to when. That night, Father Olguin visits Angela and tells her of the Feast of Santiago with an invitation. In the words of Father Olguin, Santiago was a man travelling south towards Mexico. He disguised himself as a peon, and encountered an elderly couple who showed him hospitality and fed him with their only rooster. The next day he travelled to the royal city and won a contest held by the king. His prize was to marry one of his choice of the king’s daughters. The king was unhappy with the thought that a peasant would be marrying his daughter, and set out to have Santiago killed. Santiago pulled the rooster which was given to him earlier full and alive. Four days later, Able goes back to Angela’s house to complete the task of cutting her wood. She had been indefinitely waiting for him, and her attraction to him resulted in an affair. On August 1st, Father Olguin returns to Angela’s house and realizes that Angela is not interested in him romantically. That night, a storm is setting in, and festivities go on through the town. That night, after a tense conversation at the bar, Abel stabs the white man with a knife, which kills him. Able watches the blood wash away in the rain.
