What is citizenship? It is an individual’s identity, social status, responsibilities and rights. Some scholars refer it as a relationship between the state and individuals who find itself living within its border. The Canadian Citizenship Act was originally envisioned by
Paul Martin Sr. after visiting a battlefield cemetery in the post war era. He said: “Nothing has since epitomized the concept of our nation more poignantly for me than that cemetery. Of whatever origin, these men were all Canadian.” (P.3)
Personally, I think what Canadian Citizenship means to me is unity. Canada is a country with people from many different cultures, language, ethnic groups, and beliefs. As different as all this seem, it is what makes Canada a unique country. I believe as citizens of the country we should treat people with equality and respect. For a better country, we can start with obeying the laws and to keep peace with fellow citizens in order to enjoy the rights, freedom and protection that our government provides.
