The model that has perhaps been most influential in telling us more about personality disorders is the five-factor model. This builds on the five-factor model of normal personality mentioned earlier to help researchers understand the commonalities and distinctions among the different personality disorders by assessing how these individuals score on the five basic personality traits.…

Everyone has a story. A rhyme and reason for what they do and why they do it. Sharing those experiences with the world bring out the true flavor of who you are. Before I came to Howard, I was so shy to share my story with people. I was uncomfortable in finding and expressing myself, and I was jealous of those who did not find it a struggle. While sitting back and seeing my peers impact others by how they expressed themselves, it started to make me get out of my shell as well. Dia Bui’s story that we went over the first week of school was something that really made an impact on me early on in the year.…
Many students go to college with the sole intention to get their degree, become employed, and earn a higher salary. Students with these intentions tend to struggle more throughout their college years. Students go to college because they obtain skills and characteristics that employers find desirable. These skills and characteristics also allow them to function in society. Making the leap from high school classrooms to college campuses can be difficult for many students simply because college professors expect so much more inside and outside of the classroom. Students who go to college are expected to be self-sufficient from the day they get there. At the collegiate level, students should come to class ready to participate, engage in the course…
When students go to college, they have to stay on a continuous routine. They have to be at class, do homework, socialize, and sleep. This constant routine helps the body maintain a healthier state. These can provide an idea of what students can expect from their futures. This leads to confidence. A person with a confident outlook is more likely to be successful than a negative outlook.…
“It isn’t so much about what you do. It is about why you do it. When you know the reason why you do what you do, and know it will affect the lives of people positively, you have made the first important decision”.…
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is based on the integration of 2 schools of psychology which deal with our thoughts (cognitions) and behaviours and how they in turn affect our day to day lives and relationships. As with any school of therapy, it can only ever be effective if used as an intervention at the appropriate time and delivered in the appropriate way. The relationship between Client and Therapist must be solid and based on the core conditions of Genuineness, acceptance and empathy. This being the case, the therapeutic alliance, which forms between client and therapist, is the most crucial part of forming a helping alliance. A successful Therapeutic Alliance will be based on shared goals, a clear understanding…
I am still interested in telling the story of First Generation College Students (FGSs); however, a few aspects on my concept have changed since meeting with Dr. Schrum, specifically, the message and the intended audience. By refining these areas of the project, I am able to focus on next steps in order to move into the storyboard phase.…
The third goal of the book centers on a reminder for us to be true to ourselves. As humans we are capable because we are endowed with strengths, and as such, there are reasons for us to be happy regardless of challenging life situations. However, Personality Plus emphasizes that as humans, we have our shortcomings which challenge us to be flexible. Tips that are helpful solve weaknesses in every trait. Under this goal, Personality Plus emphasizes the importance of seeing everyone as being unique and not the common way we expect people to just think in a similar way as we do or…
Throughout my reading of Lake and von Baeyer’s article, “Tips for Successful Students” I found many similar characteristics between the successful student and myself. In order to reach your full potential as a successful student you must possess portions of each of these characteristics. One can not only be goal-oriented without being active in participation. You must blend both in order to reach those goals.…
It is inevitable that at some point in every person’s life they will have to be interviewed. Interviews can be for numerous things such as jobs, scholarships, or even beauty pageants. The goal of an interview is to asses a person’s character, work ethic, and reliability. One way interviewers assess a person is by asking them behavioral interview questions. Behavioral interview questions can be difficult to answer, but it is important for interviewees to answer appropriately to leave a positive impression. To formulate the best possible response for behavioral interview questions, the interviewee should draw from their own personal experiences which highlight those things they have accomplished or have been successful at, and of course, have…
The sandwich approach starts off a conversation with positive remarks about one’s strengths. Any criticism or correction are placed in the middle and is future-oriented feedback. It’s the meat of the sandwich. In closing, positive, strength-based comments are made (Burton & Raedeke, 2008). The last comment one makes in a conversation needs to be positive and encouraging since this is the last thing they will remember and will ultimately define the conversation (Grenville-Cleave,…
Especially in college, many students have a small window of interests and an even smaller window of subjects they actually want to learn about. No student gets the privilege to take all their favorite classes throughout their whole schooling career, so catering to the learning preferences of the students would be the best way for the students to stay engaged in subjects that they might “dislike.” Tannen and Nathan both touch on the different conversational styles of men and women, of the conversational styles in and out of the classroom, and how it has become a problem in the class room. Working more with the students’ styles and preferences is the key to closing the conversational gaps presented by Tannen and Nathan, and help students participate more in class, but it allows the students to feel more comfortable in their learning environment.…
