Johnny’s parents abuse him verbally and physically, and he usually chooses to stay away from his home. He clarifies the theme of family love in the story because his family is the opposite of it. Ponyboy says, “If it hadn’t been for the gang, Johnny would have never known what love and affection are.” I chose this quote because it describes how much Johnny needs the gang. This quote identifies Johnny as a character whose life has been changed because of his peers and how they have helped him.

He is a dynamic character because he changes throughout the story. Johnny is a round character because he is not predictable, he is multidimensional, and he is realistic. At the beginning of the story, Johnny is a shy character that seems to be a follower of the rest of the Greaser gang. As the story moves on, Johnny becomes a leader and no longer follows the rest of the gang. Also, Johnny begins to appreciate life more. He used to talk about killing himself, but realizes he doesn’t want to when he is actually dieing. Johnny thinks he did not do enough in his life. Lastly, at the start of the story, Johnny could not even hurt a fly. Later in the story, Johnny kills
