The Talmud tells a midrash about what it was like for Adam and Eve during their first year out of the Garden of Eden. As the legend goes, just as soon as they began to get used to their lives, they noticed that the days were getting progressively shorter. Adam and Eve began to worry that darkness was swallowing the light, and that the earth would eventually return to its primordial state of chaos and disorder. As they sank more into a state of depression, Adam and Eve believed that darkness would be their death sentence. Then, the winter solstice arrived, and they saw that the days were gradually lengthening. In their joy for the newfound light, they celebrated an eight day festival of light (Avodah Zarah 8a).
