Genesis 1-2 Research Paper

In today’s culture there is a constant debate about the relationship between religion and science and whether they are in opposition or not. Many believe that there can only be one view, or that they must side with one only. Some of the reasons they can be viewed as opposing are the topics of creation and evolution. Another one of the issues that puts science and religion on opposing sides, is the reading of Genesis 1-2 and how one should interpret the Bible. The Old Testament begins with Genesis, Genesis 1 describes the six days of God’s creation, and the seventh resting day. Genesis 2 goes more in depth about God’s creations and his connection to them. Although reading Genesis 1-2 can be simple, interpreting it is a completely different story.
Biblical authority is very important to these creationists. They take Scripture as more than just a text, but as a rulebook that they must follow, which is why some scientific explanations may seem as a threat. Some of these scientific explanations go against what the Bible says, which causes controversy within Young Earth creationists. Although some scientific topics are opposing to this viewpoint, they do agree with other scientific explanations. “They believe that their own version of science better accords with the observable facts' (Fowler, 2010). Their main theological message is that God’s creation cannot be undermined by other explanations of the history of life such as Darwin’s evolution. “While creationists agree that species can change over time, and that new species can arise, they believe that any change can only be neutral or degrade the genomic information of the species” (Fowler, 2010). This only strengthens their belief that God created and established the original kinds of species and organisms.
