The Eastern Gorilla faces many challenges due to the destruction of its habitat and poaching. The Eastern Gorilla is the largest living primate and has now joined three other great ape species as critically endangered on The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s red list of endangered species. This is extremely worrying to many government and environmental leaders because there are only about five thousand Eastern Gorillas left in the wild. Furthermore, of all of the great ape species- the Eastern Gorilla, Western Gorilla, Bornean Orangutan, Sumatran Orangutan, Chimpanzee, and Bonobo- only the Chimpanzee and Bonobo are not considered critically endangered; however, they are listed as endangered.…

Have you ever looked at a horse and wonder how we got to the modern horse we have today? Imagine a world where there were horses of all colors, sizes, shapes were roaming the earth, but was no bigger than a size of a dog. Today’s horses only represent a fraction of the horse family tree, known as Equine. All the other branches of horses called Equidae are now extinct. The Equid family appeared 55 million years ago, in North America, which branched off into different genera such as grazers, left browsers, and mixed feeders. Today the Equid family is only represented by Equus genus, that is composed of seven to nine species, including zebras, asses, donkeys, and horses. These species are also in the order Perissodactyla, or odd-toed animal. Tracking the line of descent from Hyracotherium to Equus reveals several evident patterns: degradation of toe number, increase increment of molar teeth, extending of the face, and growth in body size; but these patterns are not found in all the horse lines.…

Living in Eastern North Carolina, I often find myself amazed at the beauty of nature. As a child, my family would travel to the local recreational center that served as a nature educational center. We would spend the day exploring the woods and appreciating nature. With my childhood being filled with the biodiversity of nature, I remain fascinated about the sounds of nature. For my Citizen Project, I decided to research animals in my community, in particular Barn Swallow birds. With this project, I will observe collective data that reported the doings and the migrational patterns of Barn Swallows. This project is quite interesting to me since I have seen these birds my entire life and one of them even nested on my front porch. With the advanced…

The psychology of buying anything resolute from their egos. Is it status, buyers are seeking for or is it the value and self-gain? The illusion that people with more assets have it all figured out and are content has encouraged people to seek the same prospects. The author explains, “Everything Now is an extreme example of an individualistic society, hence our tendency is to egocentric, focusing on the improvement of one’s self and circumstances, with the self- actualization at the zenith” (McKevitt 146). To check off an item on the fulfillment list only evokes the next item down; seemingly an endless cycle of temporary satisfaction. Personal fulfillment remains an important factor. Advertisers manipulated the consumers into believing the wants in life are needs. It has become a necessity to people to keep buying a product even though the product has less advanced. This ideology lies from people’s self-actualization and esteem: fulfillment, achievement, status, and reputation, in between: “[I]ndividual is paramount” (Mckevitt 146). In developed nations, there is an emphasis on individualism and advertisers use this strategy to evoke a willingness to buy in favor improving self-esteem. Consumers make purchase decisions based off their emotions and are easily persuaded when advertisers engage with consumer on a personal…

“Giraffes now rarer than elephants”, by Seth Borenstein is an article which focuses on giraffes and how they are becoming extinct. The eminent giraffes aren’t so famous anymore. Giraffes are decreasing in number and are at risk of becoming extinct. Most often animals slowly begin to become extinct but with the giraffe it’s a different story. In the last thirty years the giraffe population has dropped by nearly forty percent. Nobody thinks the giraffes are becoming extinct because we see them at places like the zoo. This is called a silent extinction. Its when an animal is becoming extinct but nobody seems to notice. Scientists say the reason these animals are becoming extinct is because of habitat loss from where…
