In everyday life, I come across many people who own many different things. The reasoning behind most of their purchases is usually very simple, they either just needed or wanted the thing they purchased. Sometimes the reasoning behind one’s purchase is a bit deeper than those previously stated. Sometimes people purchase the things they do to compensate for something that they are insecure about. For example, in the text, it says,
“It was a kind of revenge for him, so tiny and used to having to run away from everyone else.” This quote explains how Ronaldino uses the giraffe to compensate for his small size. From the quote it is clear that Ronaldino is insecure about his size so he uses the giraffe to make up for it. I see this a lot from day to day and I have even done this myself. When my father was deciding on which new car to purchase, I suggested that he purchase a nice Mercedes Benz sedan. After reading the text and looking back at that decision, I feel as if I was also trying to compensate for something. The decision took place when I was in grade 11 and I believe that I might have made this decision because of my performance in school. Grade 11 was not a good year for me in terms of my grades. This may have been because of the huge change from grade 10 to 11 or it may have been because of my lack of focus on my school work. The story helps me come to the conclusion that my decision to ask my father to purchase a nice new car was just an attempt by me to compensate for my poor performance in school during that year.
As a human being living in a very complex society, understanding why people say the things they do is quite difficult. The short story helps to figure out the purpose or the reasoning behind some of people’s words. In the short story, the boys yell inappropriate language at the giraffe for attention. The following quote explains their reasoning or purpose behind their action of shouting dirty words at the giraffe, ““We boys made faces at it from below and shouted dirty words as if it were a girl with a long neck; it was only a way of distinguishing ourselves from the children, who admired it with their mouths wide open, but inside we felt still more excitement than they did.” The boys act the way they do because they simply want to stand out from everyone else, or in other words, they just want attention. This helps me understand the actions of many people in society and myself. Ever since I can remember, I have always tried to speak whenever I could. During all 12 years of my education, I have always tried to participate in in-class discussions. Before reading this short story, I thought that I always tried to talk because I always had something important to share. Now after reading the story and looking back at the things i said, some of them were not really vital to the discussion. Looking back at my 12 years of education, some of the things I said during class were only for attention, not for actually contributing to the discussions. The short story The Giraffe, helps me to the conclusion that some of the irrelevant things I said during in-class discussions was only to get attention from my peers and/or teachers.
The Giraffe written by Mauro Senesi, is an excellent short story that provides me with insight of the complexity of everyday life by helping me understand the purpose of what I see, experience, or do from day to day. It helps me understand the purpose of why people purchase the things they do and why people say the things they do.
