The Giver Alternate Ending
The sled continued down the hill, faster and faster, as the sled gathered speed as it went. Jonas clutched Gabriel close to himself, and forced his own eyes open. They were approaching a small house, and before Jonas had time to steer, they slammed into it. He tumbled off with Gabriel still in his arms. The snow was cold, but still so very soft. They saw colorful lanterns above them. Jonas moaned, and whispered to Gabriel “We made it“. Jonas tried to stand, but fell again, into the snow. When he hit the ground, he must have struck a rock, because his knee was throbbing, and the snow beside him had a reddish tinge. The last thing Jonas remembered was a light, two concerned faces, and something wet on his cheek. Jonas awoke to a dim light, and a warm bed. He fluttered his eyes open, and found everything a little blurry. His knee hurt, but the pain was not unbearable. Have I died and gone to elsewhere? Jonas thought. Every step we made on the thin and almost transparent layer of snow had a sudden fall and we heard the snap, crackle and crumble of the lanky branches, crisp leaves and woodlouse infested logs. Winter was killing the forest. The trees were hunched over and their dead beat bark was blistering under the harsh weight of the freezing bitter quilt which strained their aching ancient backs. The barred branches resembled a prison in my eyes. This endless tunnel was hiding us from the crucial light of the evil eye, the moon. There were gaps in the endless arch so as to let the descending snow slowly fall on to the path we were destined to walk.…

The glistening, white snow fell slowly to the ground outside the window. The distinct shapes of the snowflakes shown; the light from the street lamp seeping through the cracks. The mumble of the heater in the corner of the room; the faint sound of the blood dripping onto the floor were the only sounds. He lay there; motionless. The thuds were entering the silent room once again. The creaking of the wooden floor grew louder and louder. Still the light of the street lamp shone through the window and onto the far wall. The nasty figure walked into the murky room. Only its shadow appeared on the far wall behind it. The boy in the bed was Eli. His tiny eight year old body was red with his own blood. Then……

The sledge knocked in the hill and Jonas was jarred loose and thrown violently into the air. He fell with his leg twisted under him while he could hear the crack of his bone. His face scraped along sharp edges of ice when he lay shocked with fear. Then he felt the first wave of pain. It was like a hatchet lay lodged in his leg, cutting through each nerve with a hot blade. He tried to move but couldn’t because the pain grew. He screamed and turned his head and vomited on to the frozen snow.…

His legs pushed him around the ice as he took several deep breaths then stood in the middle of the pond. 'Breath it is just a few spins and jumps.' Fay thought to himself as he did such a routine and started to smile as he added a few other things. His father had trained him but after the fire the ice was really his only place that felt safe for him. He skated and skated until he was mentally and physically exhausted maybe he would be able to sleep a few hours before going into work at the small cafe. He sat down on the ice feeling the cold rush to his warm body as he looked at the grey sky and smiled "Perfect time for a storm."He said as he laid on the ice looking as the lightning danced across the sky in an intense way that made Fay relax more and not hear the ice starting to crack. His hand pushed the black hair out of his face as he sat up when he heard a noise and realized it was the damn ice cracking. He swallowed hard. "This isn't good."He groaned as he tried to shift his weight evenly but soon was engulfed in the icy November water. He tried to grab onto the edge of the ice but no such luck as he went under filling his lungs with the icy liquid making sure he couldn't even try to hold…

I could hear the footsteps running up behind me and I crooked my head that way; it was my father, he was covered in blood holding a knife in one hand and a needle in the other. Tears wouldn't stop pouring out of my bloodshot eyes, I tried screaming, but nothing wasn't coming out, I tried getting on my feet as I stumbled my way down the stairs and out the door into the frosty air, which by then felt refreshing. I stopped outside the front door trying to process everything that was happening at that time, my breath was leaving my mouth in clouds into the stale air, I then felt a sharp sting in my neck, and dropped to the hard grass. Looking directly over me into my eyes was my…
