A comparison between The Giver and Holes: The ending
The reason why I want to compare the ending part is because after I read the books, I found the ending is the most interesting part for me. Since all of you have read the books, I think there is no need for me to tell the whole story again.
As we know the main characters, Jonas in The Giver and Stanley in Holes are two teenage boys that had their own fate. At the end of the story, Holes has a better ending than The Giver which has an ambiguous ending. Stanley lives happily with his family; financially success and getting success of his father foot odor while Jonas experiencing hypothermia after escaping.
At the ending, we also found many interesting parts, for example, both of them undergo a lot of changes of their personality and behavior throughout the problems they faced. Jonas became aware about the feelings other people in the community cannot feel, and thinking to return these feelings to them and Stanley became a stronger and positive thinking person.
They also are very courageous; Jonas sacrificed his life to return the memories to people and save Gabriel's life while Stanley sacrificed his own safety to run away just to save Zero.
The point is they face some dilemmas in their life. Jonas and Stanley both ran from their community. They had their own reasons but the reasons are only to save other people instead of themselves.
After all, what I found more interesting is that we can learn something from them. Both of them found difficulties in their life, and they tend to fight against their own fate and found their own way rather than give up. That’s why I think this is the most interesting and learnable from these novels.
Last but not least, there are 3 companion novels for The Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger and Son. These books will reveal more about life outside the community and other new characters. Jonas and Gabriel’s future and fate also revealed in those novels. The holes has 2 companion
