Symbol - “Square Peg In a Round Hole”
For this symbol I chose to use an expression. The “round holes” represent Society. Jonas is the “square peg”. Jonas does not understand the rules and restrictions that have been placed on the people of the community and he doesn’t fit in once he starts to use his memories and experiences emotions and feelings. This picture shows bold colors which symbolize the color that Jonas could see.
Jonas starts to rebel by lying, not taking his medication. He also rebels by giving Gabriel memories. This makes him stand out more because other people around him do not rebel. Like the picture above, he does not fit the mold. Jonas also stands …show more content…
In the middle of the story, Jonas begins to experience feelings and emotions. It reminds me of how a toddler is just figuring out how to show happiness and sadness and other emotions. When The Giver first transmits his memories to Jonas, he was just beginning to feel and learn for himself. Jonas learns that there are many emotions, good and bad ones. Toddlers are also curious, and I think Jonas is too. And because of their curiosity, they like to explore. Jonas was interested in exploring the new emotions he was feeling. During the beginning of the book everybody has the same emotions and feelings. Their feelings are like the dawn just before sunrise, which is dark and things are dull and look similar. In the dark, we cannot see differences. In the beginning of the book, we see no differences. Everyone is polite. There is no pain, fear or hatred. But once the sun rises, you can see color, beauty, and everything comes alive. This is the same transformation that Jonas experiences when the Giver gives him memories of pain and pleasure, and warm and cold and of love. As Jonas receives more emotions he realizes how plain his community is. The sunrise reveals all the beauty slowly and Jonas experiences different emotions over time. I picked a sunrise for the symbol of The Giver because I believe Jonas was the light for all those people who were surrounded in the dark for as long as they can
