I read The Headhunter’s Trumpet by Rob Magnuson Smith. I chose this because the description for the short story had “family trip to the museum,” and “chilling” in the same sentence so I figured it would be a good read. This short story did not disappoint. The author was able to put so much into less than 2000 words. Smith was able to integrate flash backs, character background, history, and dialogue flawlessly.
The story was chilling indeed. Throughout the story, the main character presented the strong possibility of becoming sinister due to her current career choice and her family’s history. This gave the story a thriller edge while educating readers on the New Guinean culture.
