The Hula, The Bela Kawe, And The Tamukung
Unit Context

In this unit we are working on folk dances. The three dances that I have chosen to teach to my classes include, the Hula, the Bela Kawe, and the Tamukung. Each of these dances have a different story behind them and come from different origins. While teaching dance there are a few specific skill cues that a teacher wants their students to exhibit while dancing. Those skill cues are; stay on the balls of your feet, take small steps, stay on beat, and good posture. This is what the students are given for specific feedback on when practicing their dances. There are many different types of assessment to asses the children on in a physical education class. Some of the different assessment tools include systematic assessment and outcomes-based learning, authentic assessment, summative and formative assessment, and process and product assessment. Systematic assessment is when record is made of the student’s performance (Doolittle, 1996). In dance I will use systematic assessment to record how well the students perform the dances that I teach them when they go through their three rotations without my cues. Authentic assessment is assessment that is to take place during the lesson. In dance this can be done by giving the students skill cues when they are performing their dance in class. Formative assessment is used for giving feedback (Doolittle, 1996). Again this is more ways to give feedback to the students while dancing, whether it be corrective or positive. Summative assessment is what the teacher collects for grading. In this dance unit this is what I will collect for data when the students do their three rotations, and the quiz at the end of the unit. Process and product assessment focus on the student’s movement observed by the teacher. First I started with content standard one of movement. Two different ones were used from this content standard, PE 5.1.1 which I used to asses the students on their movement within the dances that they performed. The other is PE 5.1.6 which I used to asses the students on their abilities of knowledge on the skill cues used for dance. Also used from the Wyoming content standards was standard 3.
