“Can you hear me now?” said a Verizon character in its 2002 commercials. Most people have wondered if the other person has understood them correctly. If people would practice their ability to transfer their thoughts, verbally and non-verbally, to those who are listening, and have those thoughts completely understood, they would have what is called good communication. The word “communication” comes from the Latin word “commicare”, which means to “share.” Communication is vital in different aspects of our lives, and without good communication, the world would be completely chaos.
The world we living in today lacks good communication because people allow technology to take over their lives. In Miami, Florida, a local newspaper article reports that ninety seven percent of American adults own a cell phone, and seventy three percent of adults prefer to send text messages than to communicate verbally. Text messaging seem more convenient, but in reality, it is slowly taking away from our verbal skills that we normally use in society. Pewinternet.com reports that eighty nine percent of young adults uses social networking cites. Unfortunately, some people feel more comfortable sending a text message verses talking face to face, because they feel like they can say whatever they want to say, without any repercussions. Cyber bulling, for example, has become more and more common in our nation and has caused major concerns in schools. In March of 2010, according to a Houston’s Fox 26 online article, an eight year old boy, jumped off a school balcony because he was tired of being bullied online. This situation could have been avoided if something was done sooner to stop the online bullying.
