His work was detailed over three books with a total of over 500 pages. At the beginning of each book, there a passage that states that Principia is meant to introduce and new way to conduct scientific inquiry. In the first book, this is followed by Newton’s own definitions of concepts like motion, matter and some different kinds of force. Mostly notably, Newton introduces his famous three Laws of Motion that are still in use today. The work also includes a section with rules for discussing philosophical matters. Some of the rules are: natural things usually have simple causes, that many natural things will have the same causes, and that hypotheses in theoretical philosophy should be based on things that have already happened. In addition, Newton first introduced his theory of gravity and concludes that gravity is the force that keeps planets in orbit. All of his conclusions in this text are based purely in Newton’s mathematical analysis. His ideas could not be proven or tested with the technology he had. Newton even admits in the text that he cannot explain the reason for gravity or motion and therefore, it can only be a hypothesis. This text also started a new ‘Newtonian’ tradition of using mathematical theory in the world of physics. This is still common practice today when we cannot collect today or conduct experiments in new
