Jan Van Eyck’s painting; “The Arnolfini Portrait” depicts Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife. Arnolfini was a merchant from a city in Tuscany, Italy, called Lucca. The Arnolfini family was very powerful. People often say that the woman in the painting is pregnant, but that is not the case. In fact, she is holding her full-skirted dress to her stomach, because that was the contemporary fashion. Jan Van Eyck was really interested in the effects of light in paintings, and used it a lot. Van Eyck was very clever when signing his works. Da Vinci’s work is also the most mysterious painting. For instance, the figure in the painting is believed to be a woman named Lisa Gherardini, a mother of two children. On the other hand, it is believed that the woman is the female form of Leonardo Da Vinci himself. Another rumor to take into consideration is the fact that the woman has no eyebrows. This once more incited rumors about the painting. Leonardo was a very busy person, so people would say he never finished his work. On the other side, people would say that years’ worth of restoration removed the woman’s eyebrows completely. Whatever rumors are true, it’s hard to tell.
