to the model used by Professor M.E.P. Seligman; he describes five key elements of resilience which include: Emotional elements, overcoming life’s obstacles with determination and keeping a positive attitude by maintaining calmness and balance. The spiritual element gives us a vision and a purpose in life to believe in a higher calling. This power gives us self-worth and someone to believe in, and speak with when we think all hope is gone. The social element is important because we value our free time with friends and family. The social element helps us to unwind and feel good about ourselves. The most important element is your family. Your family, if the ties are strong, will make you strong and healthy (Harrington, 2012). The stronger your family ties, the more resilient you will become. Having a healthy family relationship helps us to do well in life.
By allowing the body and the mind to recover we can overcome our dramatic situation and become more resilient.
We develop resilience by adapting to an adverse situation, for instance, a serious illness, tragedy, threats or trauma. Some military soldiers may sometimes struggle with depression, even have post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to their experiences. Thousands of soldiers experience post- traumatic syndrome disorder which is hard to treat due to the situation and how individuals deal with their circumstances differently (Seligman, 2011). To be a resilient person means that you can bounce back quickly from any difficult situation. By working out, having regular doctor visits, and eating healthy, this helps you become resilient and helps your mind to function better, so there is more productivity in the workplace. We have to discuss resilience more in the workplace, which will help our department heads better understand their employee and what troubles them. According to Harrington (2012) “Resilience is the development of psychological strength to assist the individual to overcome and grow from challenges” (p. 30). Resilience allows us to continue to work hard in our life, regardless of our mental status or our health concerns, we continue to push our bodies and minds to its
limits.
