Gun control is an issue because some people want guns for self-defense,recreation and with some people, maybe to commit violent acts.
I believe that the Federal Government should require stronger background checks for people attempting to purchase guns that are not specifically categorized for recreational use. Also, tougher penalties for illegal sales of guns by dealer to people who don’t meet the background check requirements. Further, people with felony convictions, mental illness histories, members of hate groups and illegal immigrants should not be able to purchase guns.
Government officials as well as ordinary citizens are questioning whether attempts to further
regulate guns is a possible violation of our civil rights, human rights, and second amendment rights that are spelled out in the Constitution.
In most states gun control legislation is mostly based on what the Federal Government has enacted, however there is little uniformity among the states. In many states it violates the law to leave a loaded gun within reach of a minor. Seven states even prohibit concealed weapons. Vermont doesn't even require a license or permit to purchase, carry or conceal a weapon.
Yes , Pennsylvania gun laws are tougher than most states. For instance, felony convictions do not disqualify gun ownership, where as a misdemeanor might. Pennsylvania also requires a 48 hour waiting period before final sale of a gun. Another example is sawed-off shotguns are illegal and one cannot alter manufacturer's serial numbers on guns.
Yes. In 1968 members of congress from both major political parties acted to control guns following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr and Robert Kennedy. It resulted in the passing of the 1968 Gun Control Act. Basically when a gun is used to commit a crime in any locality across the motion it is addressed on a local level. Depending on the act of violence it could also be addressed in state and federal courts. Yes. Example, Australia. They resolved it by having stricter gun control laws. Automatic and semi-automatic weapons were banned. Stricter licensing rules and background checks, longer waiting periods, weapons buy-back programs.
