What reasons for which do we write great stories? To entertain, is one. Shakespeare’s works, for example, were almost all written for entertainment - to be performed for an audience. As over four centuries later these works are still being analyzed and produced, it is obvious the purpose was achieved. A second reason is impact. Some stories are written to change lives, to engender a change in view. Another purpose may be to teach, such as The Boy In the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne. That novel was written to give an insight to the…

Currently, a plethora of outstanding stories have been written. What makes a story, though? The answer is the elements that the author includes into his or her writing, such as symbolism and imagery. "Hills like White Elephants," written by Ernest Hemingway, and "A Good Man is Hard to Find," written by Flannery O'Connor, are just two examples of admirable work. Each writer incorporated plenty of elements to improve the story. Since the amount of elements is limited, these two writers exploited several of the same ones. Although the stories have numerous resemblances, they are also remarkably different.…

Both essays are also similar and different in their style, Brady uses repetition while Atwood numbers her topics. Sadly, audiences, readers, historians, poets, basically all lovers of the arts, rarely have a problem ignoring or throwing aside the plight of Calpurnia, and Caesar and Cleopatra aren’t usually looked upon with negativity. People probably choose to neglect the casual throwing aside of Calpurnia in an attempt to reduce the guilt felt by those who are starry-eyed with the apparent glamour of the love affair between Caesar and Cleopatra. I strongly feel that the people who are surrounded by this “glamour” ought to realize and be aware of Calpurnia’s situation. History is filled with extra marital affairs, but how often do we stop to think of the abandoned “Other”? If one just pauses to give attention to the woman thrown aside, one realizes that the affair that appears to be so grand may not be so grand after all.…
