There were so many different halls and doors that Billy had gotten lost within a matter of seconds. He was about to head back downstairs to ask for directions, when something caught his attention, there was a door with a big red sign that said, do not enter. He knew it’s rude to be nosy but Billy couldn’t help myself, he hardly knew a thing about the landlady.
Slowly, Billy pushed the creaky door open. The room was dimly lit, you almost had to squint to see, Billy could see trinkets thrown every where across the floor, so with caution he stepped into the room, making sure not to trip over anything. Amid all the junk something caught his eye, it was two large wooden boxes lying on the other side of the room, as Billy made his way over to the boxes he noticed the names Mr. Mulholland carved into one and Mr. Temple carved into the other. A wave of anxiety washed over him, those were the names of the people from the guest books! Ever so slowly Billy opened the latch on the box easing the the large top off. His breath hitched in his throat, Billy was so terrified he could hardly move, because staring back at him were the glassy eyes of Mr. Mulholland. Ripping off the lid of the other box he was meet with the same sight, only it was Mr. Temple, neither of them were moving, they just sat there like lifeless

They slowly walk through the cracked pathway until they reach the steps to the porch. Beatrice opens the sturdy door with her keys. “Honey, I’m home!” Scottie yells into the empty living room. “Must you do that every time you come inside the house?” She says fondly. “Of course, I must.” He says as if she should already have known the answer. While they were talking, Alice and Jake, Scottie’s younger siblings, heard his announcement and excitedly ran out of their room and down the beige stairs. “Stop making all that racket!” she admonishes her children. “SCOTTIE!” they yell out enthusiastically. “You’re home!” Alice states, full of wonder that her big older brother is finally back where he belongs. “Well, it’s obvious that I’m home unless I’m an imposer who’s secretly an alien”, He jokes, winking at Alice. “I definitely didn’t miss your humor,” Jake lightheartedly says. “Oh, come on, I tell the best jokes”, Scottie says smiling. “Yeah right, in your dreams”, Jake jokingly teases. “Leave your brother alone for right now. He had a long trip and he’s probably exhausted.” Beatrice gently tells to her…

Nowadays, the new trend is the have the most. People are constantly judging each other on how much they have or how new it is. Society does not look down upon materialism, but rather celebrates it. But this was not yet the case in the 1920s. During this time period, there was a move toward mass production but the idea was not accepted by all. Many people detested the idea, one of these people being Willa Cather, who valued simplicity and intelligence over money and items. This tug-of-war between old values such as art and history, and the new values of technology and material wealth, is a theme Willa Cather addresses in her book The Professor’s House. The novel is centralized around the St. Peter family: husband and wife,…
