The Limits Of Self Censorship

The limitations of freedom of speech have been highly debated for years. Although the right of free speech is explicitly stated in the United States Constitution, society encourages individuals to use self-censorship. Self-censorship is a decision not to say something. Self-censorship is usually done to avoid hurting someone else’s feelings, but it is also a form of assimilation. When individuals have an unpopular opinion, often times they will keep it to themselves to avoid backlash and criticism from their peers. Without people sharing their unpopular opinions in a public platform, there would not be any of the great historical figures that are known today like Angela Davis, Martin Luther King Jr., and Maya Angelou. Sometimes, one person’s strong views are enough to spark a national or even global movement.
People who bluntly state their opinion are often criticized by others for being insensitive and ill-mannered. Additionally, it is expected for people to avoid potentially sensitive topics in a public setting such as political issues, religion, money and the physical appearance of others. Such topics are usually okay to discuss with family or close friends in
private settings, but should be avoided when talking to acquaintances or coworkers in casual or professional settings. These topics are seen as taboo; discussing such topics can easily trigger emotion and discomfort in others.
The term “politically correct” describes saying something in a non-offensive manner.
As journalist Michael Kinsley stated in his article “The Unbearable Silence of P.C.”, politically correct is never used as a compliment. When someone is called politically correct, it means that they are sugar-coating and covering up what they actually want to say but are too afraid to. Politicians, especially do this to avoid offending the masses. Though it is impossible to not offend every person, politicians carefully prepare their speeches and try their best to be sensible when discussing delicate issues such as global tragedies, poverty, and race. Ironically, when people do tell the “harsh truth” they are often accused of being cruel. Sometimes, unpopular opinions can even get a person out-casted from a
group.
Freedom of speech allows others to express their ideas and incite new ones. Political issues are important to discuss because it is crucial to know what is going on in the world. The world is changing more and more everyday, and it is necessary to know what is going on, as these changes could directly impact many people. People should feel comfortable talking about these issues with people who have the same opinions on certain political matters, but should also be comfortable listening to those who do not agree with them. Disagree offers room for conversation; it would be boring if two people agreed on every single thing. Disagreement gives others the chance to hear someone else’s standpoint and expand their horizon. Exposure to new ideas can lead to many opportunities and collaborations.
Without freedom of speech, the United States of America would not be what it is today. It would be unimaginable to live in a world that prohibited exchanging ideas and new information. The country would practically be void of thinkers, leaders, and inventors. Sharing knowledge and opinions with others is crucial for progress and moving forward as a nation.
