concept that avoids hurtful language, and promotes not being offensive towards others. 79% of American adults say that it is ruining the united states. The definition according to the Merriam- Webster Dictionary is the “confirming to a belief that language and practices which could offend Political sensibilities should be eliminated.” Political correctness stifles honest debate because it is used to shame people into silence and its perpetuating both ignorance and prejudice. Therefore Political correctness should be suppressed.
Political correctness shames people into silence because it compromises freedom of speech.
Communication is the centerpiece to solving problems. Political correctness limits communication therefore people become afraid to speak their minds. According to the International Debate Education Association (IDEA), debate is a way “to foster national understanding, cooperation, and a free and lively exchange of ideas.” -EVIDENCE- (IDEA) explains that debate is essential to growth, national and global understanding, and to express helpful new ideas. Debate makes people want to speak. Another example of this can be seen from Ed Younkins a Professor of Accountancy at Wheeling Jesuit University. “Political correctness is a multicultural tool to limit thought in education, science, and culture by intimidation and coercion”, (the practice of persuading someone to do something by using force). -EVIDENCE- Ed Younkins fact explains that Political Correctness limits freedom of speech and thought. TIE- Not only does Political Correctness shame people into silence, but also perpetuates both ignorance and prejudice. Ignorance refuses to listen. Lack of knowledge is a serious issue in the U.S. and the whole world. Without communication there is no knowledge. With no knowledge there is no strength. For example, if you don’t teach a child responsibility they are not going to grow up. It keeps people closed-minded and ignorant to other views. An expert opinion can be seen from Sean Donnelly a former Special Operations/Forces Marine. He states “When we are afraid to mention statistics and facts, due to the potential of offending someone, it is a detriment to society and causes regression.” Donnelly explains that when political correctness shames people into silence it makes people ignorant and uninformed which causes us to return to a less developed state. This is important because we must be informed and we must not be afraid to offend others. Another example of this can be seen -USE THE NEWSPAPER OR BOOK PAGES SOURCE- Some people may think that Political Correctness is helpful because it makes you take other people's feelings into consideration, and promotes politeness. The truth is it shames people into silence. Debate is essential for growth, and strength.
