Gregor stayed the same throughout the story and has always wanted to help. When his mom fainted, he jumped at the opportunity to lend a hand, “he too, ran into the next room as if to give his sister some sort of advice” (Kafka 1177), even though he knew he was incapable of helping, since he was a beetle. He never thinks twice about helping his family, and is always accepting of the fact that he has a role that needs to be fulfilled as their provider. Without him being the head of the household, the direction of the plot would have been entirely different. The use of static characters contributes to the readers’ sense of uniformity that makes the story less troublesome to follow.
