A Helping Hand “The other side of the sky”, written by Farah Ahmedi and Tanim Ansary is a memoir describing the Afghan war with the soviet union and how Ahmedi, and her mother were trying to get into Pakistan to be safe from the war but they could not cross the border because of the guards, However, A man named Ghulam Ali decided to lend a helping hand to Farah and her mother even though they did not know each other, because of this kind and selfless act, Farah and her mother were able to go into safe from the war. In this memoir we learn about two different things: Survival and helping others.

One lesson that Farah learned is survival. The first thing she learned about survival was that they were only risking injury by charging up against the gate with the rest of the crowd. In paragraph 3,
We were only risking injury. In the story, people who charged up against the gate were hit with clubs and carbines, so she wanted to make sure she would not get hurt. The second thing she learned about survival was that they needed money in order to cross the border gate. In paragraph 5 the excerpt states, “Throughout the day, while some of the guards confronted the crowds, a few others lounged over to the side. People approached them quietly. Money changed hands, and the guards then let those people quietly through a small door to the side.”. In the story, people who gave money to the guards that were lounging were able to cross the border gate. The third thing she learned about survival was that they needed to use a different way to get into Pakistan, rather than the main border gate. In
