The piece of Art, Smiling Girl, a Courtesan Holding an Obscene Image, painted by Gerrit van Honthorst in 1625 can be seen at the Saint Louis Art Museum. I was initially drawn to this image from across the gallery mostly due to the subject’s bright red dress with gold sleeves, it was one of the brightest colored images in the gallery. It is about three feet tall and two feet wide, it is an oil on canvas painting. As I approached the image, I was still intrigued as the image she is holding is of a naked man facing away, the subject in the painting seems to get enjoyment from this. To me this piece of art makes me curious, I want to know who this woman was and why she is holding that image. The artist seems to be communicating the importance of…
Applebroog’s art style is full of variety as she makes art in many different forms. These forms include painting, drawing, and sculpting. Her work tends to center around feminism, gender politics, and sexuality. I personally feel that the themes of her artwork, while inspired by feminism, may also stem somehow from her depression, as she was hospitalized for depression during the time she had been drawing close up sketches of her own genitalia.…
The painting tells the story of Beauty and the Beast in one image. It reminds me that love comes in all shapes and sizes and that you shouldn’t judge a person by their appearances. Not everyone is who you think they are at first glance. I love…

In the background of the piece there is a woman holding a dead chicken with a bowl of what looks like possibly fruit on her head. In front of her is a child standing with her back from the viewer and is holding a basket of fruit that she seems to be presenting to the woman with the chicken. Front center of the piece is a couple. The man seems to be trying to lead the woman somewhere. She stands in front of him with her back turned away from him and has her hand placed over her chest.…
It is a timeless image of a young girl playing dress up in a young woman’s dress. She is standing in the center of the frame on what appears to be a large patio after what appears to have been a thunderstorm or a summer rain. With her right hand she holds the back of the dress in place so it stays around her tiny waist. Looking down at the dress as she spreads the dress out and around to her left with her left hand in a twirling motion. The movement can be seen by the blurred effects created by the perfect choice of shutter speed. Its just enough to slow the movement of the dress but not so much that it comprises the clarity of the rest of the subject. Certain parts of the image appear to be slightly over exposed with an abundance of light reflecting off the background and illuminating the white areas of the dress. This makes the subject really stand out. The contrast of the black lacey material against the white translucent materials also is very appealing to the eye. The image seems to give you a glimpse back in time to the memory or a dream which reminds you of innocence, imagination, and carefree world of a young…

Snow White’s story starts out like most. Once upon a time, in a peaceful kingdom, there lived the most beautiful woman that ever was. She was married to the kingdom’s most handsome ruler. The king and queen were very much in love and soon after courtship they were expecting a child. Pregnancy was not what the beautiful queen expected. She had aches and pains, swelling, and she gained weight everywhere. One night, deep into her pregnancy, the queen felt sharp pains in her stomach. She woke up her husband in a rush – the baby was coming. As the pregnancy had been, the delivery was painful. The queen suffered hours of contractions and labor. The king was by her side the whole time; while he was not happy that his love was in pain, he was excited…
In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, one of the seven dwarfs is straight up named Dopey, and each and every one of them is portrayed as a hapless dummy who can't take care of himself. Snow White saves these slovenly adults from their pigsty by dusting, sweeping, washing dishes, tidying and sprucing — tasks that the dwarfs apparently never learned from their mother (since women must teach men how to do all the…
The woman is wearing a white robe and is draped in a blue material. The color blue is also found in the sky and in the flowers that one of the children is extending to the woman. Pink is very prominent in the painting. A piece of the figure’s clothing is pink and the clouds are pink. The winged children have a pink hue as well. The color white is significant because the bird above the woman is white. The light in this painting appears to be radiating from the woman, further deeming her importance. The lighting and colors found in the work are used to show that the communication between the bird and the woman is important…
From dazzling dresses, to happy ever afters, the Walt Disney corporation has little girls around the wold choosing princess as their future occupation. What the fairy godmothers left to tell us, is that the gender stereotypes depicted in these motion pictures are the poison apples girls are being fed. It’s time that we gaze behind the twirling creatures and the enchanted lands, to realize that the princesses shown are not the best role models for little girls.…
The image that appears twelve times in the painting is the Statue of Liberty facing forward from her legs up. One can see most of the statue, including the torch, and the horizon behind her. The painting is composed mostly of a cool blue. In addition to the blue, a vibrant red is included, creating a contrast in the painting. Strangely enough, the painting is not centered, but rather aligned to the right, leaving a lot of unused space on the left. The repetition of the statue forms a harmony of sorts, but the individual coloring creates a small separation.…
