First of all, is it the truth that animals are necessary for animal testing? Well, animal testing happens all around the world. They consist of vaccines, household cleaners, drugs, and …show more content…
Just in 2010 alone, 97,123 animals suffered pain during experiments while being given no anesthesia for relief, including 1,395 primates, 5,996 rabbits, 33,652 guinea pigs, and 48,015 hamsters. Gretchen Courtad believes animal testing for medical reasons is very necessary. Without testing on animals there is no way to advance medicines. In her opinion there is not an alternative way other than going to human testing which would cause serious negative results. According to my research this is not valid because there are other alternatives. These alternative ways are cheaper, more accurate, and more humane. We could use artificial human skin. These are made from sheets of human skin cells that grow in test tubes and can produce more useful results. There is …show more content…
Many of the animals subjected to testing are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act. Some animals that do not get this luxury are mice, birds, fish, and reptiles. Originally, the AWA was called the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act, says the National Anti-Vivisection Society. The LAWA was established in 1966 for the concern of cats and dogs that were being used in research. Later in 1970, the AWA was first amended. They expanded the act to protect warm-blooded animals but not farm animals. They soon changed it again so there weren’t any mice, fish, birds, and reptiles that were protected. There was a new law that stated that it was a crime to promote fighting between the animals that weren’t protected. Some people might argue that they do not care about mice and fish and they can test on them all they want. Well that is not a valid statement because all animals matter. Even though mice are gross and scary, they still have friends and family. Also, animal testing isn’t even fair to us. 92% of experimental drugs that are safe and passed the animal test are deadly to us. A heart pill was tested on mice and was then released to the public. It cause over 30,000 heart attacks says udemy blog. So animal testing is not fair to both humans and our beloved
