CAFOs may be able to feed a lot of people but they have many more disadvantages than advantages. An example is that they are a huge part of pollution in a couple of ways; the methane from the animals adds to greenhouse gas emissions and animal waste is not properly disposed of and contaminates drinking water making people in the area sick.
CAFOs are terrible for the environment in many ways, the methane from the animals adds to greenhouse gas emissions, the excess amount of waste is spread over farmland which then contaminates ground water and pollutes the soil and air. These farms produce 500 million tons of manure every single year, this is three times the amount of sewage humans create. Animal waste is put into lagoons, it festers in these lagoons until it is able to be spread over farmland. While sitting in these lagoons it leaches into groundwater and contaminating it so that it is unsafe for drinking and even recreation. Once …show more content…
The pollution in the groundwater causes gastrointestinal problems such as upset stomachs and diarrhea. The fumes in the air can cause things such as skin irritating, along with using the water, and can also cause eye irritation as well. Things such as E Coli and salmonella get into the water that people drink and even possibly on the food they eat. The other problem that affects anyone who consumes these products are the hormones that are given to cows to produce more milk, once they have gotten all the milk out of the cow she goes to slaughter, the chemicals from the hormones reside in the meat and are then passed onto humans and can cause an array of
