If you are hunkered down in your own home, be sure to first utilize the OCOKA method defined previously to evaluate your observation method, advantage points, your best escape route if necessary as well as your plan of attack. You cannot assume that your stockpile of guns and ammo will keep you safe or for how long. Consider other methods
to deter and ward off offenders such as boarding up windows and doors, stacking sandbags, and using obstacles to slow or prohibit entry.
In the event that you have bugged out to your alternate location, again assess the risks and hazards to your personal safety. Is your location easily reachable? Can you conceal your shelter using what you have in the wilderness? It will be more difficult to secure your location depending upon the terrain but one thing that you can do is to find a branch, approximately 6 feet in length and attach a knife to the end of it. This will at least provide you with some defenses against four-legged intruders, and the two-legged kind as well.
