“The Rape of Europa Reaction” In the film The Rape of Europa showed a despicable display of hatred between the Jewish communities. During the war in 1939 Europe’s most treasured and valuable artwork were stolen by the Nazis. Some artwork was destroyed, lost and others ended up in a museum. However, the monuments men were a courageous group. They helped to recover as much of the culture of Europe (Rich Berge). Rose Valland the French art historian, was a hero in my opinion. Someone had to be the voice for the people who rightfully owned the artwork. The Nazis had no justifiable right to take such valuable prize possessions. If she didn’t keep records of the artworks who would know that they even existed. It’s been an important part of our permanent exhibit. But I also saw the larger, moral responsibility. His quote exudes a complete compassion and a tremendous respect the people that lost their lives. In addition, I’m sure he felt a moral obligation to return the artwork. Although returning the paintings made him sad he knew the rightful owner was Claude Delibes (Rich Berge). Throughout history the museum had a substantial amount of people that came to view the paintings. Quite naturally the museum had a lot to lose when the paintings were returned. However, the family had so much to gain when they were returned. Memories are worth more than any amount of money. The daughter I’m sure was ecstatic when they returned.
