The relationship between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth.
In Macbeth, Shakespeare expresses the relationship between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth as a strong bond between the 2 characters which slowly deteriorates into a weak connection which hangs by a thread. As soon as Lady Macbeth receives his letter informing her that he will be king she feels proud of her husband and Shakespeare gives us the impression that the relationship is strong and that the two characters love each other and they support one another, like when Lady Macbeth pushes him into following his dreams and becoming king, even though she practically forces him into it, he does get what he wanted, to be king. The relationship then slowly weakens after the killing of Duncan as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth start keeping secrets from each other; they start to keep their distance as much as they can. Shakespeare then starts to present their characters as two unloving, selfish, heartless people and the relationship is revealed to be broken.
It can’t be said that Lady Macbeth doesn’t love Macbeth, because Shakespeare shows that Lady Macbeth is a character that would do anything for her husband like when she says: “I have given suck and know how tender tis’ to love the babe that milks me: I would, while it was smiling in my face, have plucked my nipple from its boneless gums and dashed its brains out, had I so sworn as you have done to this.” What she is saying is: I have breastfed a baby, so I know what it’s like to love, I loved that baby but if I had promised to kill it I would go through with it. You have promised to kill Duncan now you must go through with it too. She uses emotional blackmail to push him into doing this. It can be seen that Lady Macbeth only wants Macbeth to succeed and become king that’s why she’s pushing him into this, not out of selfishness out of love for her husband, also it can be seen that she only wants the best for him and if that means forcing him into rather than letting him back out and regretting it later she will do it. Despite these powerful feelings of angst towards Macbeth and his wife, the initial impression we get of Macbeth differs greatly from our concluding opinion. In Macbeths opening soliloquy he demonstrates his inner thoughts by admitting ‘ I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent but only vaulting ambition which o’erleaps the pretender’ Shakespeare illurstrates a esstentailly worthy and good man at this point as Macbeth admits that he has no intentions on killing the king as it would only fufil his own selfish motives. Macbeths fatal flaw of ambition is also revealved at this point as he lacks the aggression which would help him strive for his greater glory to be king. However, these admirable qualities are dashed with the entrances of Macbeths wife, Lady Macbeth who should surprise the audience with her extremely controversial character traits. Noticing her husbands weaknesses, Lady Macbeth used extremely disturbing imagery and provocative language in a bid to convince her husband to kill the king , Duncan. She says ‘ I have given suck and know how tender tis to love the babe that milks me. However, when Lady Macbeth finds out the witches prophesied Macbeth was to become king she immediately thought of ways she could achieve her ambition, committing the sinful act of killing King Duncan was the first to come to mind. Lady Macbeth challenges Macbeths manly hood by stating “It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness” The noun “milk”, a word of purity and motherly love is used to describe how she thinks Macbeth is too soft hearted and cowardly to kill King Duncan, she bullies Macbeth into going along with the plan. Within the play of Macbeth, Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as ambitious and vicious when she is first introduced in Act 1 Scene 5. Lady Macbeth is the one of the main reasons the play played out like it did. Although, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth treat each other as friends, they both have an equal say in what happens, but Lady Macbeth seems to contribute more opinion than Macbeth does. When her husband writes to Lady Macbeth about the witches, she was excited, she wanted to be queen and she did not care what had to happen for her to get there. Even if she had to force her husband to do it for her. Even though Lady Macbeth is a huge influence in the murder of Duncan and the downfall of Macbeth, there are some other factors involved. From the beginning Lady Macbeth is viewed as very controlling, strong, and certain. “First, she has very little regard for her husband's humanity and actually derides him for being "too full o'th' milk of human kindness” (Thompson 1). This shows how cold Lady Macbeth is, as milk is the food of new born children, she is implying Macbeth is too much like a kind child to murder anyone. Once Macbeth has the courage to tell her he does not want to continue with the murder she rallies, calling him a ‘coward’, saying that if he could murder Duncan ‘he were a man’. This to Macbeth, a proud and mighty warrior is a deep insult, and he soon is convinced that he will carry out the murder.…
