A profession is defined as a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill. (Merriam-Webster, 2015) Professionals require many years of training, study and practice before they are able to embody the role that their profession demands. “The Army is an American Profession of Arms, a vocation comprised of experts certified in the ethical application of land combat power, serving the civilian authority, entrusted to defend the Constitution and the rights and interest of the American people”. A Human Resources Sergeant is a professional Soldier certified and proficient at providing support that affects Soldiers’ overall welfare and well-being while assisting leaders with keeping Soldiers combat-ready.
Human Resources Sergeants have an array of responsibilities that range from supporting the development in Soldiers and their careers, to planning, coordinating and executing a plethora of tasks and financial actions and administrative duties that are essential to maintaining the flow of missions throughout all levels of the Army. Human Resources professionals are often the direct link between Commanders and their Soldiers. They coordinate timely and effective manpower and personnel support for Commanders at all echelons. HR support enhances the readiness and operational capabilities of the total force and ensure success across the full spectrum of military operations. HR support covers all levels of war; strategic, operational, and
tactical.
In order to become a Human Resources Professional in the Army, a Soldier must take a series of courses and complete trainings that continue throughout the career of professional. Perpetual training allows the Soldier to become a consummate professional, an experts in their profession.
The Leaders of the Human Resource Profession are not just proficient at administrative duties; they have many roles to balance. The first and most important role is that of a Soldier. Human Resources Sergeant are first trained at their warrior tasks and battle drills. They also serve as advisers. They advise Commanders, staffs, and Soldiers on Human Resources functions and capabilities at strategic, operational, and tactical levels. They focus on HR management; supervise personnel management activities such as personnel accounting and strength reporting, casualty operations, postal operations to name a few. According to The Profession of Arms article, the Army culture is a system that shares meaning held by its Soldiers. As professional Soldiers, HR Sergeants have a duty to lead. Due to the advising nature of the HR role, HR professionals have opportunity communicate and interact directly with many Soldiers. The role of leader and mentor is then one that is balanced within the many duties of an HR professional.
In conclusion, the Role of Human Resources Sergeants within the Profession of Arms is without question, a major contributor to the function of the Army. The Most important aspect of the Army is the Soldiers that comprise it. Without Soldiers we would not have an Army to protect and serve our country. The professional role of the Human Resources Sergeants serve as the bridge necessary to keep Soldiers paid, advised, and ready to deploy and engage in the missions of the Army. They provide the services needed to fuel The Army’s Profession of Arms.
