There was a time in the Old Testament when Judges were appointed to rule over the Israelites. “A ‘Judge’ was primarily a military leader of a particular tribe, although they could serve the role of both military and legal administrator.” (The Judges of Israel pg.1). This essay will discuss the Judges and their roles during that period. After the death of Joshua and the passing of his generation, a new generation was born that did not know of the Lord, what He had done or of His laws and they were evil in the Lords sight. (Judges 2:8-13). “Because of their disobedience, God would subject them to foreign powers. Afterwards they would repent and God would call a leader known as a Judge to deliver them out of bondage.” (The Judges of the Old Testament pg.1). As soon as the appointed judge would die, the Israelites would return to their ways. The Lord began to allow other nations to test and teach them. (Judges 3:1-4). The Israelites continued to do evil and serve other gods and because of this, they were given into the hands the king of Aram Naharaim for a period of eight years. (Judges 3:7-8). God chose Othniel to be their judge and deliverer and there was peace for forty years until his death. (Judges 3:911). As before the Israelites became evil in the Lord’s eyes and were given over to their enemies, and the king of Eglon was given power over them for a period of eighteen years. (Judges 3:12-14). Once again the Lord sent them a judge and deliverer named Ehud, who overtook Moab and was allowed peace for eighty years. (Judges 3:20-30). Following Ehud came Shamgar. He saved Israel from six hundred Philistines. (Judges 3:31). Once again the Israelites began to do evil in the Lord’s sight and were given into the hands of Jabin, King of Canaan for a period of twenty years. After they cried out to God for help, Deborah, a prophetess and leader of Israel was chosen to deliver them. (Judges 4:14-24). There was peace
