Lord of the Flies tells the story of a group of British school boys who become stranded on a desert island with no adults alive to help them. Birthday Party shows a woman who is in a relationship that is no longer good for her emotional wellbeing and in The Dolls House; young children are confined to social classes that have been set in their minds by their parents. These different instances of being trapped show how there isn’t only one way things can happen; it also shows how being trapped affects each person differently. The characters in The Shawshank Redemption and Lord of the Flies are similarly trapped physically, whereas a likeness in the two other texts is that characters are trapped mentally and emotionally. Roger is one of the predominant trouble-makers in Lord of the Flies. He is amoral and enjoys watching other people suffer as he causes havoc on the island. Roger doesn’t see how he is hurting the other boys on the island because he only cares about himself and his enjoyment. Like Roger, the husband in Birthday Party doesn’t see how he is hurting others. He uses words and actions to upset his wife and make her feel small. He is so concerned about himself and being embarrassed that he doesn’t care that he lashes out at his wife in front of the whole restaurant. Not only is he hurting his wife, he is damaging their relationship further and is probably hurting others in the restaurant as they have to watch someone be treated so poorly while they try to have a nice time. Furthermore, neither of the two really seem worried about their own wellbeing and it is ironic that they think they are helping themselves, when in fact they are making their own lives harder. Roger thinks that bullying the other boys will keep him occupied and pass time, when really all he is doing is creating setbacks in the attempts to be rescued. The more trouble he causes the longer everyone is going to be on the island, including him. The husband tries to reduce his embarrassment by being stern with his wife, but in reality he only makes a bigger scene and embarrasses himself further. Both of these characters are
