The Shift to Team Leadership: Case Study
Case 9-1 The Shift to Team Leadership
Instructions:
1. Brainstorm ways to overcome supervisor´s predicted resistance to developmental leadership.
We came up with the following ways to overcome resistance:
The training would be a requirement so that employees assist
Training would take place on Saturdays from 8am to 10am and it would last two months
The company will offer some incentives like snacks, and gifts to the best trainees
Monitor employees for a period of 2 weeks to identify their skills and abilities in order to provide an effective training, and place them in a group according to their skills and likes
Let the employees know the topics that will be covered so that they will be interested in the program by showing them the importance of it
Make them realize that the most important thing is to train employees for them to be more productive

2. Outline an initial training agenda for the developmental leadership program to present to the plant manager.
We decided that the program will cover the following subjects:
The importance of communication
Being able to communicate one´s feelings
The importance of listening
Use of techniques such as: questioning, paraphrasing, and summarizing to get out ideas
The importance of shared leadership
Leadership functions shift from time to time depending on the circumstances, the needs of the group, and the skills of the group
External relations
Empowering
Delegation
Decision making
Providing clear roles and work assignments
Be specific if possible so that they can be carried out effectively
Fairly distribute them

3. Present an analysis and recommendations to the plant manager.
Through this training we expect that employees would improve their leadership style including their communication and listening skills, also they would improve in decision making and they will be able to delegate and empower employees. By improving these skills, supervisors would be able to succeed as team teachers,
