Sometime after the narrator finds out that his brother is in jail his daughter dies. It was not until the narrator Sonny’s niece dies that the narrator tries to contact Sonny. When sonny receives the message, he responds to the narrator swiftly. Sonny admitted to his brother that he was too ashamed to reach out first. That he felt like he had caused too much pain and suffering already not to add to the fact that now he is in jail for using and selling horse (heroin). The two brother go on to discuss how when sonny is released from jail that he should move back to Harlem and move in with the narrator’s wife, which is Sonny’s sister in law.

Sonny and the narrator love each other very much. But the two cannot get passed their differences in their lives and the choices that they make. Their love often makes them fuss and fight.
