If you didn't have money you couldn't afford the telegraph. It cost between $100 and $200 to construct the lines. So if you wanted your own line you had to pay for it. The cost was quite expensive for some people. If you don't have money you wouldn't be able to buy one. The people that didn't have one would either have to borrow one, or they wouldn't talk to their family for months or years. The first line was 20,000 miles long cost about $1,400 a year which is about $150,000 today. So the people that wanted a telegraph had to have a lot of money. The bad thing about the telegraph is that the telegraph is too expensive for the people who don't have a lot of money. The telegraph was used for long distance communication and the telephone was used for even longer communication. This would make better communication skills like calling. The telegraph was only used for text messaging. Now with the telephone you can hear the person's voice. The telephone is much faster than the telegraph.
