Everybody was done eating when my cousin asked me if I would do a little wager with him. I was sitting there thinking what would it be. I had a feeling that he was in the advantage when he asked, but still trying to be competitive and to show off a little bit I accepted the challenge.
My cousin was already forcing me to eat the leftover sliced jellied cranberry sauce with salt on it, because his school, Nicholls State University beat my school, Southeastern Louisiana University in their last football game. I have never tried jellied cranberry sauce before much less with salt on it. I told him that it was not fair because the game was already done before he asked me. I suggested that we should wait for next time Nicholls and Southeastern face each other again. The salt will definitely make the cranberry more salty and sour, but still it is more desirable than what I prefer him to eat if he loses. I told him that he would eat a half-hatched duck egg if his team loses. This exotic food is called balut, which originated in Philippines. Balut is a famous street food and delicacy especially for the guys because there is an old saying that balut makes knees stronger. Balut is honestly not so pleasant to look at, but it really tastes good. I have never realized how gross this delicacy looks until some of my American friends reacted terribly disgusted when I showed them some pictures. Growing up seeing people around me eating balut like a normal food is probably the reason why I do not realize how nasty it looks. The balut may seem like a normal egg, but when the shell is cracked open the first part that sticks out is the head of the duck fetus.
