My first piece of evidence for why is when he first tried to steal her purse. Most people would have acted in a different way but she said, “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?” (5). This passage shows how even though he tried to steal her belonging she tried to help him. In this situation she could have just called the police and turned him in but she tried to help him by giving him diner and washing his face.
